Lamplighters Yeshiva Makes Ethical Closing, Set to Auction Off Assets

by CrownHeights.info

The Lamplighters Yeshiva of Crown Heights, a beacon and touchstone of Montessori schooling for educators across the world, has been forced to close its doors for the coming year due to its untenable financial situation, and has done so in a ethical manner.

Lamplighters Yeshiva, the brainchild of Yocheved Sidof, was a haven for those parents disillusioned with other schooling options in the Crown Heights community. Sadly, after struggling financially for a few years, the board decided that the school could not continue as is. Earlier this year, a fundraiser was launched to keep the school open for the rest of the year. Despite the outpouring of support, the school decided to close it’s doors.

The board of Lamplighters Yeshiva made the closing in the best and most ethical manner possible, and is in the process of settling hundreds of thousands of dollars in debts, while arranging to auction off all it’s assets in an effort to pay all teachers their monies owed in back pay.

“Lamplighters Yeshivah is liquidating their assets over the next couple of weeks,” wrote board member Eli Nash.

While the yeshiva has made the decision to close, some parents of the school are looking to bring the message of Lamplighters with them and open a preschool.

Correction: A previous version of this article claimed that the Lamplighters Yeshiva might continue to provide a preschool. This is untrue, as the preschool is under consideration by parents of Lamplighters students, and not the Yeshiva itself.
