Raskin’s Fish Enters Final Round for ‘Best Neighborhood Institution’

Raskin’s Fish Market has been serving fresh seafood to customers since 1961 when its owner, Shlomo Raskin, first opened for business. Between ice beds full of fish and refrigerators stocked with prepared foods — including Raskin’s own brand of gefilte fish — customers line up to order, careful to avoid slipping on melting ice and fish slime. It’s part of the charm!

Now, the seasoned neighborhood establishment is up against another stalwart – Junior’s restaurant – for the title of Brooklyn’s best neighborhood institution, after after four rounds of voting eliminated all the other contenders.

From DNA Info by Serena Dai:

It’s a cheesecake stalwart versus a fresh fish market in Brooklyn’s neighborhood institution final showdown.

After more than 22,000 votes were cast in the final four round of DNAinfo New York’s Brooklyn Brackets neighborhood institutions, Junior’s and Raskin’s Fish Market emerged as the final two competitors for the title of “best.”

Fans of Junior’s demolished Peter Pan Donut & Pastry Shop, with more than 11,000 people casting their vote for Junior’s.

Greenpoint’s Peter Pan won just under 350 votes.

It was a tougher round for Raskin’s Fish Market, which went up against David’s Brisket House last week.

David’s received a whopping 6,329 votes for its sandwiches with enormous stacks of pastrami, corned beef and roasted beef brisket.

But it was no match for Raskin’s lovers.

They cast more than 10,800 votes for the fresh seafood market, sending it to the final round.

Who will be the winner? Vote here, and check back next week for the result.

His name is actually Schlomo and this place is awesome. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people.
