Cops Targeting Jaywalkers in Crown Heights

Over the past week or so in Crown Heights there have been several incidents of jaywalkers being ticketed by police for crossing the street on a red light.

In one such incident, a young man crossed the street at the intersection of Kingston Ave. and President St. while the signal was red. Despite the absence of any cars at on road, two police officers detained him and issued him a citation.

Several other incidents have been reported in the neighborhood, especially on or near Eastern Parkway.

According to a New York City law blog, jaywalkers can only be fined for crossing: A. at a crosswalk, B. that has traffic control lights, and C. while the signal is red.

Crossing in the middle of the street – outside the white lines – does not count as jaywalking and is legal, though not necessarily safe.

  • New York's finest

Since Crown Heights is now crime free the NYPD does not have much to do, and is freed up to focus on jay walking….

  • finally

As a driver it is so frustrating and unsafe when ppl walk at don’t walk its about time they start cracking down on them

  • come on!!

    what the??
    Welcome to new york!!
    What next??
Are they doing this on the other side of Eastern Pkwy????

    • Lincoln Place

Which side is the other side? If you ask me this article is about jay walking on the other side of Eastern Parkway.

Make sure to walk a bit off the cross-walk (after checking for cars). Then no ticket.

But seriously j-walking tickets in New York?! That must mean the streets are so safe and cops are dying for something to do….

Jaywalking has always been illegal. In one Marx Brothers movie, there is a Wanted poster in which Harpo is wanted for jaywalking with a 5 cents reward being offered for his arrest.

  • I jay walk too.....

but I apprecaite them cracking down on this! seriously! I think they should really crack own on those who cross at the intersection on eastern parkway as cars are flying! it’s so dangerous to te pedestrians and the drivers too!

Listen I’m guilty of doing it too but it really is unsafe and I hope the fear of getting a summons gets people to stop

  • how come...

a 12 yr old was arrested to animal abuse, but when a gang of 8 teens beat up a yid, they get sent home to Mama?

  • what if...

…I cross 10 ft from the intersection?
Can they still ticket me then?
Hey, it might be safer that way – It will give time to see the drivers making a turn while talking on their phones and ignoring the pedestrians!

What about those young women crossing against the light, holding a toddler with one hand, wheeling a baby in a stroller with the other hand, and blabbing on a CELL PHONE AGAINST HER NECK!!!

Suicide wish, chas v’sholom?? I’ve seen it more than once.

Come on, people, get off your cell phones and join the world!!

  • agree with #3

I doubt very much that the police will be giving tickets for jaywalking to our black neighbors in Crown Heights. and that is racism!

  • priorities...

How about first ticketing all those cars who speed past stopped school buses and almost running over kids… or those selfish people who don’t bother shoveling snow in front of their houses, making it impossible to pass with a stroller.

  • GUESS AGAIN

You wonder what’s next? ask Bloomberg, next is Tanning salons!!! while agree people cross recklessly, especially on Eastern parkway, forget the sarcasm, the cops should be focusing on the purse and phone and sliver snatchers instead. but then again they don’t want to risk their lives with these punks. It’s much easier to pick on some Jew who they know is not going to pull a gun on them……

  • This is Jewish targeting

Overdoing the parking tickets, literally walking up and down the streets several times a day and these ludicrous jaywalking tickets ONLY happens in the Jewish area of Crown Heights. They NEVER stop people on Utica or Nostrand Aves ‘to detain them’ and take their money for jaywalking. When my registration was late in coming, it was in effect but I hadn’t received my copy- I received a ticket first thing in the morning near Kingston. Next day I moved my car past Utica knowing I was far less likely to get a ticket and I did not. The jaywalking business is obvious targeting and should be well publicized. They can’t ‘get the Jews’ on crime charges so they are looking for the jaywalking- punishing people for behaving like decent human beings. Anything done to target a specific group of people who do not pose a danger is a reportable outrage.

  • This is normal practice in most parts of the world

Where is everybody rushing? Safety first!

I wish they would ticket the illegal motorbikes that plague CH (hint: if it doesn’t have a license plate, it’s for a reason). This would be a BIG source of revenue for NYC (each bike could get 4-5 tickets, including a four figure ticket for uninsured).

I don’t know where the blog got his info, but it’s inaccurate. See http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/downloads/pdf/hwyrules.pdf, rule 4-04(c)(3):

    (c) Restrictions on crossings.
    (1) No pedestrian shall enter or cross a roadway at any point where signs, fences, barriers, or
other devices are erected to prohibit or restrict such crossing or entry.
    (2) No pedestrian shall cross any roadway at an intersection except within a crosswalk.
    (3) No pedestrian shall cross a roadway except at a crosswalk on any block in which traffic
control signals are in operation at both intersections bordering the block
