Oholei Torah Receives Hands-On Experience in Shechita
During these days when we practice the Kaporos, talmidim in Oholei Torah from fourth through sixth grades received a live hands-on experience in Shechita and Kashering a chicken.
This program, initiated years ago by Rabbi Shlomo Furterfas, gave the talmidim an opportunity to learn and see the various laws and how shechita is done. Three chickens which were previously used for kaporoes were schechted by Rabbi Pinchus Rapoport, then kashered and cleaned.
The talmidim also saw the various chalofim, special shechita knives and the special care they are given to make sure if their kashrus level.
After the chickens were properly prepared and cleaned, chosen talmidim were then able to take home a quarter of a chicken of which they took part in of its preparation.
Rabbi Yehoshua Lustig, Principal, said that in connection with kaporos, we use the opportunity to give the talmidim an exciting hands on class is shechita and kashrus.

Thank you Rabbi Futerfas and Rabbi Rapoport for a real lesson in torah!!
Glad I wasn-t there!
A little freaky for a kid to watch, no?
Medakdedk
Hands-on? Or live demonstration?
Did the kids watch or did they shecht?
Parent
My son enjoyed it, and even brought home a piece of the kashered chicken to cook and eat.
A proud OT parent
This was a great experience and lesson for my son he came home all exceeded and was so proud to bring home a some for my wife to cook. Thank you Rabbi Rappoprt and Rabbi Futarfas for taking on this wonderful hands-on program.
angery
i know as jews we are told to kill a chicken, bus use some logic!!!!
Opt out
I hope that they gave the children the option to opt out before they showed them the Shchita, for some children it may be very traumatic. They must send a note home the day before and get the parents’ signature to allow the child to watch the actual Shchita.
Otherwise there is no substitute to show and tell teaching. hatzlocha Rabba.
