What Was That Marching Band on Kingston?
CrownHeights.info was inundated with emails and phone calls, all wondering what was the mid-afternoon marching band on Kingston Avenue all about. Our photographer happened to wonder the same thing.
Turns out they are all part of the elite marching band of the Medgar Evers High School – H.S. 590 located on Carroll and Nostrand. One of the organizers told us that once the weather gets nice the group tried to get out and practice as much as they can.
something right
believe it or not..saw them today and really enjoyed it!! At least some are off the streets and doing something right!
Bruchim ha-boim
The marching band was to greet the new rov.
Vayehi rov b-oretz - rov in der erd
Let him be the rov of their crown heights community. They won’t require a smicha.

Hate to sound racist here, but it’s a pleasure to see a group of young black men and women doing something constructive and beneficial for themselves and the community instead of the not-infrequent wild behavior that only scares the Jewish community and furthers mistrust and stereotyping. How about compulsory marching-band membership for first-time petty offenders instead of prison or community service? :) I’d love to see these kids forced by the courts to put in 500 hours of music practice on our streets–it just might do them some good. (Plus the neighborhood would get free entertainment.)
Bright Side
At least they are not on drugs, out robbing people, or looting. Good for them!!!

Actually they’re on the streets AND doing something right.
your negative comments
BS”D
what is the point of the comments section?
it is not supposed to avail people the cowardice to vent their negative emotions behind the anon identity of the internet, bc guess what, it is all the same to Hashem.
Your negative comments are not welcome.
WHO, WHO Can Be The ROV

Kingston ave?
Enough PC talk
1 is right.
And some of these kids’ mothers are the ones who are the first to complain when we make a little too much noise on SBS.
A schvartz yohr bleibt a schvartz yohr, and my prediction is that over 50% of these kids will end up in the justice system.

It was not amazing for the cars stuck behind them for fifteen minutes. The band leader specially stopped them to show them they were not marching correctly – heels down first – and had them practice marching in place. I personally thought it was a chutzpah and did not enjoy at all.
ceo
I’m so happy for those people they look so happy, and its nice to have something like this in the neighborhood
To #23
Nothing to do with PCness…Its called being a civilized human being. What would you do if you went on a website and saw someone write, ahh who cares I should just come out and say it, half these jews are going to start fraudulent businesses and rip tons of Americans out of their money
to reuven
how in the world can u talk like that?
A Freilechen Purim
they are coming to make noise and wake us up Purim is just aruond the corner go buy your Mishloach Manos DONT wate for Sunday
Have an easy FAST!!!
Enough PC talk
Because if they wrote that ours are all going to become crooks they would be wrong. For every crook, we produce 100 honest businessmen who help Americans get done what they have to get done easier and better. Besides, we condemn our crooks. They lionize their rapists, murderers, dealers and thieves and look to them as leaders.
When it comes to shuchors, I have not seen any proof that they are anything else besides “memutza between chai and medaber”.

The candor of the community amazes me, and yet in light of its collective education and training, some of the comments are startling and disappointing.
