Ten Yad Not Giving Away Condo

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — The goal was simple, sell 4,000 tickets and raffle off a condo. The drawing was supposed to be today, September 14th, but instead all those hopeful ticket holders dreaming of becoming homeowners received a notice that the raffle was cancelled due to not being able to sell enough tickets.

The notice read as follows:

Ten Yad regretfully informs you that due to the current economic downturn we were unable to sell a sufficient amount of tickets to cover the cost of the condo raffle.

You will be contacted by email, letter or phone regarding a full refund arrangement. (refund will be given by the method of original payment)

To all our loyal supporters we thank you sincerely and bless you with a sweet and healthy new year.

The Ten Yad Committee

The terms and agreement of the auction stated that “In the event that an insufficient number of tickets are sold, you will be contacted by mail with a choice of a refund or $360 credit at our next auction.”

It said CLEARLY that this might happen on the original offering…..this is sad enough, without you guys trying to make them look bad…..

  • A CH Resident

It is really sad that it didn’t work out… I am sure that just as I am dissapointed, a lot of people out there were hoping to experience first hand a “meshaneh makom meshaneh mazal”…. and with the economy as it is… most people can hardly afford a down payment, or even dream of having an apartment for which they spend so little…
Yet… that little, right now, before Yom Tov… for many can hardly be called little!!!
I honestly hope that the refunds are processed as quickly as possible, as at this point, the money that took a whole year to be paid, could make a big, no… a HUGE difference on having a nice meal for Yom Tov, or even a new article of clothing to feel good on Yom Tov!!!
We were there for you Ten Yad… PLEASE, BE THERE FOR US and refund the raffle’s fee before Yom Tov!!!
We would greatly appreciate!!! Thank you!!!
    Kessivah VeChassimah Tovah!!

  • good!

nadiv did you even bother reading the whole article? crown heights info quoted the terms. so why think that they are trying to make anyone look bad?

fact, raffle was canceld? yes. is it news? yes. was it posted respectfully? sure seems so to me.

i guess its all in how your read things. take a more positive look at things and maybe you will see more good in the world!

    nahama dekisufa.
    1. In my opinion it’s a bad way to raise money, how much was Ten Yad going to keep had they sold 4000 tickets? It seems that the cost of the raffle was not worth it to begin with.

    2. CH Resident, who in their right mind buys a raffle ticket expecting to win?

  • also ten yad supporter

also didnt see it advertised and sruly it was probably just a bad advertisng campain

they tryed somthing and it did not work so what the bid deal and they said it may not work out so get over it and move on.THANK YOU TEN YAD

in link above (just an example) they have given a voice to an entire community!! who’s voices were suppressed for too long!

NO OTHER (CHABAD) SITE HAD THE NERVE TO FACILITATE SUCH A FREE/OPEN EXCHANGE!

  • TenYad droppes the ball

who said that they have to sell 4,000 tickets and make $1,440.000.00 when that condo sells for under $500,000.00
they could have sold the tickets for less then $360 and sold a bunch more tickets and covered the cost of the condo and then some
or what would be so bad if they only sold 1,500 tickets that still covers the condo plus $40,000.00
I hope another org picks up the ball where TenYad dropped it. and raffles a condo off and sells the tickets with a deal ie 1 for 100 3 for 250 at a lower price they will sell many more tickets and cover the costs and be able to raise money for the cause and make a person a new home owner

  • TenYad charged to much

TenYad was greedy in such economic times charging $360 per ticket.
no wonder they didn’t sell 4000 tickets which is 1.4 million that is a mil over the cost of the condo

  • to yossi

do the math, had they sold their 4000 tickets, they would have made almost a million and a half- which is TRIPLE the cost of the apartment!!!

there is nothing wrong with buying a ticket and hoping and praying to win… especially if you don’t just want a new apartment- you really need it.

  • disappointed

Mendel Drizin should have given the apartment as PR. No one is lining up to buy. Drizins reputation precedes him…he could have changed all that.

Good point! And… for those who may choose to leave their money in this worthy cause, this may end up being the mitzvah of giving tzedoko l’shmo, ולא על מנת לקבל פרס!!!!!!

tzedakah is tzedakah and it is a great cause

  • Ten yad

ten yad i would buy a tiket or 2 but i did not see it on crownheights.info
maybe if you had advertise it here the story to day would be AND THE WINER OF THE TEN YAD CONDO IS …….

  • Ten Yad, we love you!

    B“H

It was advertised all over the place, especially on Shmais.com.

Also, we got several reminder phone calls about the ticket deadline.

How can anyone say that there wasn’t enough advertising?????

    Ten Yad, we love you!

Maybe try again with selling tickets for the apartment, as the grand prize at your auction in the fall????

Keep the price at $360. a ticket, however, as those who choose to just donate the money to you at this current situation, might be upset that they could have waited and bought cheaper tickets later (if you lower the price for the tickets in the future).

As for the person who called Ten Yad ”greedy” — oh, brother! How can you say that???? Do you know how hard it is to raise funds? Don’t you know how hard the volunteers of Ten Yad work as it is?

Please Hashem, if there was a decent chance that Ten Yad could make enough at this fundraiser to avoid even one more fundraiser in the coming year, that’s more time and energy that the volunteers can give to the Kallahs!!

To the kvetchers: Think before you talk!!!

PS — I’m not a part of the Ten Yad organization, just a lucky kallah (from a few years back) who is so grateful for all that they did for me then!

  • ten yad fan

I work for an organization that makes money on its raffle- sell more tickets at a lower price. I for sure would have bought if the price was much lower. The people who can afford $360 per ticket can afford to buy the condo themselves.

  • Bubby M/cr

Ten yad made it clear at the onset that they needed to sell 4000 tickets for the raffle to go ahead. Yes, I am disappointed like everyone else, but aren’t we missing the point, this is an absolutley fantastic tzedokah organisation that helps our families in times of much stress and simcha, and we were given an opportunity to become partners with them. Surely at this time of the year and with all the tzores that we are experiencing personally, locally and globaly we need all the zechisim that we can gather. We have done this mitzvah, and for some with true mesiras nefesh, DON’T spoil it, go forward and may the Eibishter bless all of us together and individually with a Kesiva v’chasimah tova, a’gut gebentsh yor’ for ourselves and klal yisroel and we should all be able to obtain apartments like the one advertised and better in Yerushaliym ir Hakodesh with Moshiach tzidkeinu Now!

  • ruvi

THe issue was that Eliezer Salik the one who ran the raffel told me as of friday there were way oversold and the raffle will be on monday…… So i bought a ticket saturday night and he lied he knew weeks ago they had no interest and barley sold any tickets… I hear only 600-700 so why lie…. I already disputed the charges and will never trust …. again

  • bk

I am not sure what all the complaining is about. When you decided to buy the raffel it was because you wanted to give tzedaka for ten yad. and if hashem wanted you to have a condo then one of us would of had it. The money is to help kallas to start off with basics.
The loshon Horah here is so unreal.
    Think before you write.
Yom Hadin is in a few days.
we should all have a simchadike year.

  • didnt see it anywhere

I didnt see it advertised anywhere either. It should have been advertised on all the websites. Was there a mailing? I would have bought one too.

I did not have money to buy a ticket for myself as well
I wish they would have had a chance to win!!
even if half of 4,000 tickets were sold they should not have called off the raffle!!! even if they barely cover cost they should not have called it off!!! So many people put money down that they barely had

  • Ten Yad Helped 1,000s Start New Families

I agree with Nadiv at the top. The graphic used here and the wording is very disrespectful to an organization that has done such incredible work for our community’s new families. I bet most of you here and family members of this website owner have been assisted by the loving, generous work of Ten Yad. I am very hurt- as a person helped by Ten Yad- by the tone and graphic of this article.

  • Not a CH-er

    I dont feel so bad.
Ten yad did a good job of soliciting the rest of the country, yet they only support kallahs in CH. You want our support, you support us.

  • cha

just a side issue I think if someone won this condo valued at half a million, s/he’d be liable for taxes on its fair market value. that would come to a 6 figure tax bill. anyone know more abt this?

  • tax guy

It’s a good thing that this was canceled. The winner would have had a tax bill of $200,000. And unlike a cash raffle, he would not be able to take from the winnings to pay the taxes.

And if you ask, but he got a condo worth $450,000, that is Drizin’s asking price. He isn’t getting that from people (just pass by the condo’s and see how many people have moved in). The condo’s are worth far less these days.

my gleanings from all the comments:
    1. THE LH IS UNREAL! WOE – NO WORDS :(
    2. YOU GAVE THE TZEDAKAH TO THE ORGANIZATION, HOPING FOR A CHANCE….
THANK HASHEM THAT YOU GAVE, AND THAT YOU HAVE A GUARANTEE TO GET BACK 10 FOLD – BE HAPPY THAT YOU GAVE, AND IF IT IS PAINFUL – HOW MUCH MORE SO THAT HASHEM WILL PAY YOU BACK BIG TIME.
    3. AND SOMEONE IS NOW JUDGING MENDEL DRIZIN? BIG NO NO – WOE? R U GD?
    4. YOU DIDNT SEE THE AD? I DONT THINK ANY BRAND OF GLASSES WD HELP YOU BC U HAVENT OPENED YOUR EYES.

  • rikke r.

i agree with the guy on top why do you have to write about it in such a mean way like they did something bad? they tried but couldn’t sell enough, and on their website is says clearly this might happen? you guys should be writing about this in a nicer way.not in a way that tries to make them look bad!
and the picture you used in the article is also intended to make them look suspicious.
elul time! writ about ten yad in a nice way chinfo!!!!!!

  • ten yad insider

a s aten yad committee member i would like to clarify some details. 1. we never set a specific amount of 4000 tickets to be sold. we would have made the raffle even at 0 profit, but we didnt come close to selling enough.2. all positive comments are appreciated. all negative comments and criticisms are not. best wishes for better luck on all future endeavors.

  • To Ten Yad Insider

AS a matter of fact, the add does not say that 4000 tickets NEED to be sold, but that a MAXIMUM of 4000 tickets will be sold… So yes, you are right on #1, and surely right on #2! It turned out as it was meant to be, hashgocho pratis… and life goes on. BUT, what about the refund??? When will anything be clarified about that? Not all that bought the ticket could afford to just dimiss it and count it as tzedakkah…. some, if not many, of us were truly hoping for good luck and Syata Dishmaya… and really could use and need that money for Yom Tov. One thing is to use that money, which was put together over the course of the year, or scratched together at the last minute to make it on time for the raffle…. to buy the raffle, in the hope of winning… another is to have it just sitting there, unused, when it really is missing in the budget. Since it is now obvious that the Ten Yad Comittee is following the posts, and aware of the comments, PLEASE!!! respond to this question, as I am sure that it is on the mind of many! We (the many) would really appreciate a prompt refund, hopefully in time for Yom Tov!!! Thank you!! Kessivah VeChassimah Tovah!!

  • Ten Yad Kallah

ten yad is a wonderful organization that helps kallahs in CH as well as kallahs from out of CH . My family is on shlichus, and they were wonderful when I became a kallah. Keep up the amazing work. Much Hatzlacha with all future fundraisers

  • smells fishy!!!! they hope to keep 95%!!

    WHY RUSH TO CANCEL!?

    i smell a rat!

they wont extend the raffle or offer a smaller cash prize!
so they can keep 99% of the easy money

they dont really believe the $ will be requested back by all the hopeful ppl who scraped it together
whats more dissapointing to the ticket holders?
    a) Cancel
    b) Extending deadline
    c) $100,000k prize!

  • ten yad insider

tenyad is working very hard to process the refunds as quickly and efficiently as possible. although we appreciate all donations we stand by our committment to honesty and will refund every penny as we promised would happen in this event. please dont smell something fishy. we are straight and honest and rely on this community to see us for what we are. we are out there to help kallahs. period.
