Crown Heights Strong – Armed Home Invader Gets Beatdown, Is Tracked Down By Shomrim and Arrested

An armed home invader, who forced his way into a Crown Heights home Monday and attacked a Jewish mother with her child, received a strong lesson in Crown Heights strength, thanks to Syata Dishmaya, a proud father, and the dedicated volunteers of Crown Heights Shomrim.

The frightening incident took place Monday afternoon when a man, wearing a ConEdison jacket and mask, rang the Ring doorbell at a Jewish family’s home. The father of the home, just a few short blocks away, checked the camera on his phone and told the person to leave. Instead of leaving, the unwanted visitor forced his way into the home while brandishing a gun and attacked the people inside.

The miracles were just about to start.

The father, still connected to the Ring doorbell, heard the screams as the attack took place, and in a matter of moments, was rushing up the steps of his home. Standing as a testament to the strength of Crown Heights, the father stood up to the home invader, disarming and knocking him unconscious.

Seizing the moment, the victims fled the home to safety and called the police. Despite a lightning-fast response time, they were unable to make it in time to catch the attacker, and as he regained consciousness, he retrieved his firearm and some valuables, then fled the home.

Caught on surveillance camera, the home invader could be seen running off with his head covered in blood and a jacket turned from fluorescent yellow to red.

Simultaneously, the mother made another call, this time to the volunteers of Crown Heights Shomrim.

Responding to the area, the Shomrim volunteers immediately began searching for the attacker, combing the streets of Crown Heights and searching for clues as to where he may have run. Then, a second miracle made its debut.

In the invaders haste to grab whatever valuables he could, he had taken a phone from the home, one that was able to be tracked as he made his escape. Tracking the phone took the Shomrim volunteers to the East New York/Brownsville area of Brooklyn, where they again began to search.

One eagle eyed Shomrim volunteer was able to spot the attacker, recognizing him discarding the ConEdison jacket and changing most of his clothing. While one Shomrim volunteer followed the attacker, another one flagged down two police officers who were able to place to the man in handcuffs.

A quick search of the man yielded the firearm used in the home invasion as well as the stolen goods. Under the man’s hat also told the story, with multiple injuries and wounds from his struggle with the homeowner.

Multiple miracles, the strength to fight, and the dedication of the Shomrim volunteers came together to take a potential tragedy and change it into a moment of victory.

One veteran Shomrim volunteer recounted to CrownHeights.info his memory of responding to the call of the home invasion of the Lapine home in the spring of 1992. “I vividly recall responding to the incident in which Mrs. Pesha Leah Lapine was horrifically murdered during a home invasion,” he said. “This incident was very similar in which an armed attacker invaded the home of a Jewish family, and Boruch Hashem this one ended differently.”

“Nowadays we have so many different people coming up to our front doors, deliveries from UPS, Amazon, food deliveries, store deliveries and it is very easy to be lulled into thinking its ok to just open a door,” said Mendy Hershkop, a coordinator in Crown Heights Shomrim. “I know my kids sometimes just run to open the door, and this incident unfortunately serves a strong reminder that we need to speak to our families and reinforce the potential danger in becoming complacent.”

In this case technology is what ultimately led the father back to his home to protect his family, and is what gave Shomrim a solid description of the perpetrator to be able to go out, search, and help police get this dangerous person off the street.

“We have invested heavily in technology and have volunteers with unique and specialized experience that together were able to bring this incident, and many other [thankfully] less serious incidents to successful conclusions,” said Shomrim.
