A old crime is now back in fashion, mailbox fishing.

The 71st NYPD precinct located in Crown Heights has reported an alarming spike in mailbox fishing, the use of an item to “fish out” mail from mailbox drop boxes found on the streets of the city.

“Protect yourself from mailbox fishing,” the precinct warned on their social media. “When mailing checks, money orders, or tax returns, drop off your mail inside the post office to ensure it doesn’t get stolen from a mailbox. If you see anyone tampering with a mailbox, report it by calling 911.”

According to a police source, the mailbox in front of the post office on Empire Blvd near Nostrand Ave has become the thieves favorite, with multiple incidents reported and continued thefts.
