A tragedy of epic proportions took place this week, as a nine-year-old girl was found murdered in her Crown Heights apartment.

According to the NYPD, 911 was called Sunday when employees of a store at 571 Lincoln Pl said they smelled a foul odor coming from upstairs. While the details of exactly what occurred remain unclear, ultimately the police arrived to find 9-year-old Shalom Guifarro unconscious and without a pulse. She was pronounced deceased on the scene.

Neighbors described the family as having well-mannered children, but what appeared to be an abusive mother.

“Very well mannered,” one neighbor told the New York Post. “The mom was a nightmare though. She was always screaming at them.”

A report on CBS told another version of events, quoting a police source who said that it was the mother who called 911, saying her daughter was not breathing. They say her 13-year-old sibling was in the apartment and told officers her sister had a temper tantrum, and her mother spanked her and put her in a timeout. Then she and her mom went to the kitchen to eat, and later found her younger sister unconscious.

After the investigation launched on Sunday, the police quickly labeled the case a homicide, saying that the girl died of blunt force trauma to her body and had bite marks on her back.

The assistance of Chessed Shel Emes was not needed in this case.

As of Monday afternoon, no arrests have yet been announced.
