Pair of Tefilin Stolen from Vehicle, Desecrated

On Friday night, a pair of Tefilin was stolen from inside a vehicle parked in the vicinity of Carroll Street between Troy and Schenectady Avenues.

On Shabbos morning, a neighbor discovered the Tefllin scattered on the ground near Re’im Ahuvim, a Shul on the corner of Carroll Street and Schenectady Ave.

Presumably, the thief noticed the nice velvet bag inside the vehicle and assumed it had something of value inside. While the contents of the bag are indeed quite valuable to a Jewish person, the thief ostensibly didn’t see things that way, and discarded them on the street like littered garbage.

The incident prompted a Shomrim coordinator to tweet “Would you leave your wife’s jewelry in your car? Obviously not, so why leave your precious Tallis & Tefillin?”

It’s the moisture that destroys it.
My sofer inspected my batim warped out of shape, sent for a batim macher’s opinion, shel yad could be saved but shel rosh beyond repair. He wondered how I managed to get so much moisture in there, I told him it was stored in the trunk, but rain should’nt get in there… he told me the trunk is the worst place for tfillin as humidity destroys the batim and parshios. Heat is fine so long its dry, but won’t survive humidity.

there is no fear in these people.
    we need surveillance cameras everywhere!
    which reminds me,
maybe where the car was parked had a surveillance camera which might have picked up some activity ?????????
and yes, never leave valuables in the car.
it might have been a mistake to leave it, though…..

Gotta agree with Gadi. For the life of me, every time I read these articles I have to wonder what planet people are living on that they think its fine to leave such expensive and precious things in their cars!!

Goes to show you, in Crown Heights if you leave something of value in the open in a car, you can say bye bye item. It is the living culture of Crown Heights. This was not the first time nor will it be the last time that ocurrances such as this will take place. Just obtain an armored personnel carrier fo self protection and shot on sight. After you live in a city where the Mayor, De Blasio–enough said.
