2 Fatally Stabbed, 2 Shot at End of Labor Day Parade
Two people were killed in separate stabbing incidents and two people were shot in Crown Heights Monday evening as the West Indian Day Parade wound down, police said.
Despite getting off to a relatively peaceful start, the end of New York City’s largest parade saw a sudden spate of violence around the route in Crown Heights and Bedford-Stuyvesant.
Around 6:00 pm, a 27-year-old man was stabbed in the neck at Eastern Parkway and Bedford Avenue, and a 26-year-old man was stabbed in the neck in front of 1394 St. John’s Place, police said. They were each transported to Kings County Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
The stabbings appeared to be unrelated. One person was taken into custody at the scene of the stabbing at St. John’s Place.
At about 6:30pm, a man was shot in the arm and a woman was shot in the leg at 650 Eastern Pkwy. The victims, both in their 20s, were taken to Kings County in serious but stable condition.
And at about 7:15 pm, two people sustained minor injuries at 327 Eastern Pkwy. The nature of their injuries were unclear.
Police are investigating.
Deborah Harris was running a food stand was near Bedford Avenue when a melee sent dozens of paradegoers running to avoid the flying bottles and fists. When the panicked crowd ran right past Harris, she said, “All I wanted to do is get down.”
“I didn’t know if there was shooting or something, and I didn’t want to get shot, so I got down,” she said.
NYPD showed heavy presence at the parade Monday after Police Commissioner Ray Kelly promised a plan “to have a peaceful event” following years of violence at the parade.
But Harris and other West Indian Day Parade veterans say they know firsthand how the celebration can quickly become chaotic. In 2011, several people were shot and killed during the weekend-long celebration, and in 2007, there was a shooting near the parade route.

Good. Maybe eventually it will be canceled. You never hear of these things at the Israel Day Parade, Chinese New Year Parade, Puerto Rican Day Parade, etc etc.

I agree with all of the comments. It does sicken me that it seems that this particular parade is the only one that ends with fatalities.

The problem is that no one talks about the violence at other parades. A few years ago several girls were gang raped at the puerto rican parade but it was reported as fondling and quietly disappeared. The difference with the West Indian Day parade and others is that the WI parade has over 3 million attendees and is the largest parade in NY while the police presence is much less. Anyone is allowed to enter the parade and dance along side the actual parade. If people tried that at the St. Patty’s parade they would be removed. Also this parade is in a violent neighborhood in Brooklyn while all the other parades mentioned are on the upper east and west sides of manhattan which are completely different neighborhoods. The majority of West Indians are black. If this was not the case then NY would not cram 3 million people into the Crown Height section of BK. Any crime that happens on Labor day is attributed to the parade. A man killed his girlfriend in her apartment it is reported with the parade it just happened that this year and last year there actually was violence at the parade. In all seriousness the actual surprise is that 3 million people partying for 2 days with not enough police officers and only 2 people died, there was no stampede, no one crushed even though there were shots fired people stopped to help people up.

First, the police are unable to monitor or control the parade inspite of Kelly’s pledges. Second, this violence has gone on so long–one wonders about the offical policy of city hall because it seems that they tolerated for all these many years. Third, if they want to have a parade, is should be moved to an isolated part of the city such as downtown New york and then if they did what they did there would be no more parades/ Finally, this event become an unbearable burden upon the neighborhood owing to the noise, the bad behavior, the violence and the splitting the city into two and forcing people to hide in their homes out of fear for whatever while the police are ineffectual.

Look at the stats. On any other day of the year the murder rate amongst the west Indian folk is probably way higher than 2 dead out of three million. This seems to be a major drop in crime if you ask me.

we have parades for almost all cultures some of them are peace full some of them are violent but the parade is not for neither almost its to symbolize the countrys culture so if they get violent that’s just what they do
