Wheel Thefts Resume: Brooklyn and Carroll

After a long winter hiatus, the Crown Heights wheel thieves are back in business. Their latest victim: a white Acura sedan parked on Brooklyn Ave. near the corner of Carroll St., whose wheels were stolen in middle of the night and the car’s body left resting on crude cinderblocks.

These brazen thefts have been plaguing the Crown Heights community in recent years, devastating vehicle owners all over the neighborhood. The targeted cars have been mostly new and in the upper range, though some older and cheaper vehicles have fallen victim as well.

Be sure to protect your vehicle in as many ways as possible so you do not become a victim. Anti-theft lug nuts and car tilt alarms are two examples of relatively simple safety measures that can be added to a vehicle.

Remember, even if an added security measure isn’t 100% foolproof, it will still likely deter thieves from targeting your car and cause them to move on to an easier target.

  • Wheel locks

Wheel theft is so easy. Takes just a second to pry off the hub cap, then, with any wrench that fits, off with the nuts, and then the wheel.

Certainly, the car makers can make some kind of lock, which will prevent unauthorized “car mechanics” from having an easy steal.

  • Already have, so use them

Turns out that such theft-resistant thingamajigs already exist. Just Google search “Wheel locks.”
    But do they really work?
