Carjacker Clings to Exterior of Vehicle for 9 Miles

A Crown Heights resident on his way home from work Sunday evening had a harrowing experience when a man attempted to carjack his vehicle as he was driving through the Bronx. The driver then filmed a dramatic scene unfold as the attacker attempted to break into several other vehicles, one of which he clung to for almost nine miles along a busy highway.

The incident began to unfold Sunday evening on Bruckner Boulevard near 138th Street in the Bronx. Our source saw an African-American male walking toward him in middle of the road. As the man was acting suspiciously, the driver tried to move out of his way – first to the right, then to the left – but the suspect kept changing direction and coming straight towards him.

Suddenly, the suspect ran over to the passenger side of his car and tried to pull the door open. When this failed, he tried to smash open the window. When he tried to drive away, the man clung to the side of the vehicle and continued to hit the window in an attempt to smash it open.

The quick-thinking driver turned and drove over the sidewalk and on to another street, causing the suspect to fall off his vehicle. The suspect then ran back to the main road.

Realizing that he would attempt to break into other vehicles, the driver called 911 and informed them of the incident. He then turned on his phone’s video-camera and began filming the dramatic scene that unfolded.

After attempting to stop a few more vehicles, the suspect managed to bring a taxi SUV to a stop and again try to smash open its window. As the taxi tried to drive away, he clung to the exterior of the vehicle down a busy highway for almost nine miles!

All the while, our source says he called 911 multiple times and alerted them to the urgent situation. The dispatcher refused to remain on the line with him, and insisted that help was on the way.

About 10-15 minutes later, the suspect fell off the taxi. He then ran over to another vehicle, opened the door and pulled its elderly driver out. As he attempted to drive off in the stolen car, a highway patrol police vehicle finally arrived and blocked his way.

The suspect then tried to back away, crashing into a tractor trailer. Several other police vehicles arrived and closed in on him, then wrested him from the vehicle and placed him under arrest.

After assisting the police with their criminal report, our source said he overheard an EMT worker tell the officers that the suspect admitted to being heavily intoxicated with a variety of narcotics.

Only after the suspect was safely handcuffed and locked away did the driver realize how shaken up he was, and had to rest before he was able to muster up the strength to drive home.

Update: Police sources identified the suspected carjacker as 26-year-old Matthew McCorkle, who is a Bronx resident.

  • mistake

if there is visual evidence of a person committing a felony they are not called a “suspect” but rather a “perpetrator”

    c’mon guys

  • Why has carjacking revived now?

Back in the 90s, there were many carjackings, until the laws got tougher; I think I remember hearing that it then became a federal offense. And then there were not many or any carjackings.
So, what’s going on, that there are suddenly a string of many more carjackings — there was just a report of an attempted carjacking on Empire Blvd, just a few days ago, of the car of a shliach with a child in the car!
Have the new tougher laws expired? Are the gangsters now again in favor of carjackings, regardless of the new tougher laws? What’s up now?
