An NYPD sergeant charged with pummeling a suspected car thief in Brooklyn while off-duty defended himself yesterday, telling the Daily News the assault charges against him are baseless.

“The truth will come out,” Sgt. Greg Abrahams said after being held for 15 hours in the alleged beating of an ex-con who police say was trying to steal the sergeant's Ford Mustang. “This is so bogus. It's really just being blown out of proportion.”

Abrahams was agitated outside his Nassau County home yesterday as he removed parts of the dashboard, allegedly damaged by Gaspar Alcalde, 48.

An NYPD sergeant charged with pummeling a suspected car thief in Brooklyn while off-duty defended himself yesterday, telling the Daily News the assault charges against him are baseless.

“The truth will come out,” Sgt. Greg Abrahams said after being held for 15 hours in the alleged beating of an ex-con who police say was trying to steal the sergeant’s Ford Mustang. “This is so bogus. It’s really just being blown out of proportion.”

Abrahams was agitated outside his Nassau County home yesterday as he removed parts of the dashboard, allegedly damaged by Gaspar Alcalde, 48.

The 13-year veteran said he never hit Alcalde, whom the sergeant and Officers Mark Zajac and Chris Kirch confronted in Park Slope after another group of cops arrested the suspect for allegedly trying to steal Abrahams’ car.

But a fellow sergeant accused Abrahams and the other off-duty cops of roughing up Alcalde. The off-duty cops, all assigned to the 71st Precinct in Crown Heights, were each charged with misdemeanor assault and given desk appearance tickets.

Alcalde was charged with criminal possession of stolen property, criminal mischief and attempted grand larceny. His rap sheet includes 14 arrests dating to 1982 and convictions for robbery and drug offenses, a police source said.

Alcalde’s mother defended him yesterday, saying her son has a history of mental problems, which worsened with the recent deaths of his 19-year-old son and two of his brothers. She also railed against the cops’ alleged violence.

“They were out of control,” Virginia Batista, 76, said in Spanish. “[Gaspar] wasn’t acting violent. They shouldn’t treat him like an animal. They shouldn’t beat him.”

On-duty uniformed cops arrested Alcalde at 2:30 a.m. Friday after spotting him sitting in Abrahams’ car, a police source said. The officers then canvassed the area, looking for the Mustang’s owner.

When the cops ducked into 200 Fifth Ave., a popular restaurant and bar where Abrahams, Zajac and Kirch were hanging out, Abrahams told them he owned the Mustang, the source said.

The on-duty cops drove Abrahams to the crime scene on Lincoln Place, where Abrahams, Zajac and Kirch allegedly assaulted Alcalde, breaking his nose after he was already in custody.

We unfortunately have the same problem in our community. Jews mashering on fellow Jews. Let’s not forget the false charges that was brought upon by Chanina and A guy named Kansopolsky (from Sydney) on people that give there time and money for the betterment of this community.

“Recently, charges and counter-charges were filed with the NYPD after the violence in 770. Sadly, the only ones who will win from criminal charges are the lawyers.

The original charges were came from what police had witnessed when 770 was shut down that night. Yesterday, malicious and retaliatory charges were filed by 3 Israeli Bochurim Schenur Kupchik, Schneur Malka (who has been pictured throwing Seforim and has since left the country) and Aaron Pugatch (who witnesses to the carnage in 770 said that he wasn’t there) on 5 innocent Bochurim, Yungerlite, Local Businessmen Baali Tzedaka and children of Merkos board members.

When we contacted these individuals regarding these new charges they said “If Yudel Krinsky drops the charges on Thaler we will drop our charges”.”

Sgt. Abrahams is a good cop and I think the 71 is lucky to have him. He’s right that the charges are probably bogus.

My friend’s father received a ticket for not having his little Chewowa (dog) on a leash, but the ‘authorities’ unleash criminals on the tax-paying public at their own discretion!
These criminals are FAR MORE DANGEROUS than a little dog, but they say: “We’re in charge, keep your mouths shut!”
“Alcalde’s mother defended him yesterday, saying her son has a history of mental problems…” Every (decent) mother will defend her son.
He got the ‘mental problems’ from a life of crime. Which came first, the chicken or the egg?
I’ll beat this slob up and claim I have mental problems (I do, I can’t stand to see criminals treating with satin gloves — I go CRAZY!)
