Auto Larceny at new highs? Just when we think it couldn’t get any worse, it did. Over Shabbos a total of 10 cars were broken into, 5 out of which the airbags were stolen.

The airbag incidents had taken place at the following locations to the following cars:

• Honda Civic – Montgomery St. between Brooklyn and Kingston
• Honda Pilot – Carroll St. between New York and Brooklyn
• Honda Civic – Carroll St. between Brooklyn and Kingston
• Honda Accord – Montgomery St. between Brooklyn and Kingston
• Honda Accord – President St. between Nostrand and New York

10 Car Break-ins Over Shabbos & Motzoai Shabbos!

The following incidents are cars that were broken into for items in the car and loose change:

• Honda Accord – Carroll St. and Schenectady Ave.
• Honda Accord – Empire Blvd. between Troy and Albany
• Saturn Ion – Empire Blvd. between Troy and Schenectady
• Ford Taurus – Troy Ave. between Carroll and President
• Ford Taurus – Carroll St. between Troy and Schenectady

At each of these incidents the victims, who were not all Jewish, called police and informed them of the crime but each one was told that the police was busy that night and to expect long wait times for officers to arrive on scene. One victim waited over 4 hours before giving up. Is this new tactics to attempt and discourage victims from filing police reports and drive crime numbers down?

Most of these incidents will go unreported due to the fact that people don’t want to be ‘bothered’ with having to spend the half hour filling out the report. Those people are not only lazy, they are selfish too. A crime that isn’t reported is a crime that never took place. Not reporting crime gives the police the ability to go on saying that ‘not only is crime down citywide it’s even down in Crown Heights specifically’ and you know what? It would be true! Then there isn’t any need for patrols dedicated to such crimes.

Fact: Police patrols in the area are weak, at best. Petty crime such as a broken car window costs a simple $100 to $200 to fix, that’s given they didn’t have the airbags ripped out, then the job turns into one that is upward of $2000. Cars can then be rendered disabled for weeks.

Petty Crime is a big nuisance, it should already be considered a quality of life type crime, and it’s about time they deserved proper addressing. With perps like Nelson out on the streets after being caught and reported on CrownHeights.info no less then three times.

What are we supposed to do?

    Start harassing 311 until something happens. Every family that lives in Crown Heights, every old enough person in that family shall call one time every day, before they go to school or work, or right after they come home.
    Hopefully someone in there will get some brains to tell the mayor to wake up and stand up for the Jewish people.
    Or just start a riot until the police come to town and then maybe with a few riot police crime will drop.
    Stage a parade through the streets to the mayors office once a month and he might get a headache every time the police have to break it up, that he might crash land and remember he is mayor and supposed to help his people of NYC not make them hate him, which i’m sure some people all ready do.

    After waiting almost 4 hours, I called 311 to complain. The cops promptly showed up.

    What were they so busy doing, that as soon as there was a complaint, they weren’t busy anymore?

    The following incident happened with my cousin,
    A few weeks ago at around 9am the police knock on my cousins door asking him about the car parked near his house (that was broken in to), as he looked at the car he realized that it was his. Who called the police? At around 7am a young man from our community was walking on that block and witnessed the crime take place.
    Did he right there and then call the police or Shomrim (to catch the guy in the act)?
    No, he did not! He was on the phone with his father at the time; he could not hang up for a few minutes to do the community a service. Instead He waited an hour then called the police. If we don’t start getting our act together and start acting like a community then there is no hope. Shomrim are doing a great job, but there is so much they can do.

    One Shomrim member who happened to be one of my best friends complained the other day. We go out there on our own time (volunteer) we risk our lives and spend our own money for Gas and other equipment to help our community and some people can’t even pick up a phone or give a few minutes (even when the crime was done agents them) because of pure laziness, why are we doing what we are doing?

    He’s right, your not being asked to patrol The street at night all you are being ask (truth be told you shouldn’t even be asked, it should be common sense) is to pick up a finger… and just because the crime was done to you and you don’t care, you are part of a community and you must do what is better for the community and not for yourself.
    People get your acts together, not every thing will be done for you!

    I for one would love to be part of some kind of vigilante type of group.I just don’t know how to start. If one should happen to start up I would gladly give some hours helping to patrol. even just to drive around a few hours at night reporting things to shomrim/police

    MY CAR WAS BROKEN INTO ABOUT THREE MONTHS AGO AND THE POLICE CAME VERY QUICKLY, MADE A REPORT AND TOLD ME TO CALL THE PRECINT FOR THE COMPLAINT NUMBER. WHEN I CALLED THE PRECINT THE FOLLOWING DAY AND THE CONSECUTIVE DAYS AFTER (UNTIL I GAVE UP) I WAS TOLD THE COMPLAINT HAD NOT BEEN FILED YET AND SO THEY CAN NOT GIVE ME A NUMBER YET….
    PERHAPS THE ANSWER IS TO BEGIN BOMBARDING THE MAYORS OFFICE WITH THESE COMPLAINTS ON A REGULAR BASIS. AND, TO GO ON THE AIR, ON ACTION LINE ETC. THE POLICE DON’T LIKE BAD PUBLICITY AND MIGHT THEN TAKE NOTICE.
    ALTERNATIVELY WE SHOULD PERHAPS INCREASE OUR OWN PATROL SYSTEM.

    If all those who had their car broken in to would have given the amount the vandalism cost them (insurance deductibles, rental car, etc…which i’m sure has collectively run into the tens of thousands if not hundreds…) towards prevention (cameras, etc.) we would save in the long run. and being that organizing on a large scale is koshe kikriyas yam suf, maybe it would be a nice idea for people to arrange it on a block by block basis.

    It is Very Interesting to note that
    the car break-ins that you mention happened not to far from the precint itself– which is on New York Ave. between Montgomery and Empire Blvd.
    If the police are so incompetent and inept so as not to be able to control what goes on within a few blocks of the precint..
    This fact should be brought to the media’s attention…
    Meaning that the major newspapers and radio, tv should be made aware of this sad situation & maybe
    through being embarassed the Commanders will be motivated to take back control of the streets…

    That rally @ Tishrei was a big waste of time! It looked impressive, but as always, fizzled into inaction & nothingness. Thanks to our fearless leaders, we’re left powerless & victimized.

    There was no follow-up, so the cops disappeared with their watchtower, & the crooks are back, like roaches, only bigger, better, & braver.

    BRING IN WILLIAMSBURG!! Instead of collecting Ma’as Hakahal, collect $100 per family & use it to train Shmomrim, buy equipment, & shtup our WB chevra a few $$$ for their time in advising us.

    BTW…Do Rubashkin & his pals drive Hondas?? Betcha not!

    After calling 911 four times and waiting more than an hour and a half, NYPD still didn’t show up. Does anyone know if there is a regular 718 number to call the city instead of 311 for people that live outside of NYC and want to file a complaint? I would like to thank the Shomrim members that were at the car less than two minutes after I called them and for taking their time and waiting with me while I waited for the police.

    Also, did any other break-in victims ever have their cars broken into and turned upside down only to have nothing stolen? Not even loose change?
