Stalker Arrested for Arson Attempt on Victim’s Home
Crown Heights [CHI] — A number of Jewish women who live in the area of Empire Blvd. and Brooklyn Ave. have been complaining for a few months about an African-American neighbor who stalks them and even touches them inappropriately. Shomrim responded to such calls on numerous occasions, and at one point had the police file a crime report to make sure that the situation was not being ignored.
Today, one of the victims called Chanina Sperlin from the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council to see if anything could be done. He forwarded her to Peter Simonetti, commanding officer of the 71st precinct. Upon inspection, the officer was unable to find the record of the initial crime report.
Realizing that he can do what he wants and get away with it, the man took his harassment campaign to the next level, and tried to set fire to the homes of his victims.
One fire was lit inside an apartment building on the corner of Empire and Brooklyn. The other was lit on the side of a home on Empire, where trash was piled against the wall and set ablaze – an obvious attempt to set fire to the house.
The Fire Department investigated for over an hour, and, with help of eyewitnesses and security cameras, figured out who was responsible. They also discovered that the man is an EDP (emotionally disturbed person), and they were concerned that he would do something violent if they tried to arrest him.
A few of his relatives were brought down and succeeded in having him surrender peacefully to police custody. When police entered his house, they found all kinds of lethal weapons. The man was arrested on the felony charge of arson to the third degree.
It is still unclear if he will be found fit for trial, due to his condition. If not, he will probably spend some time in a mental clinic and be right back on the streets in no time, where he will be free to continue his reign of terror.

Condition? He is probably a hard-core hard drug addict who has become paranoid due to long-term use of various illegal substances. Worse yet, his abuse problem most probably started when his mother was using drugs while carrying her tzaddikel.
Shomrim Report
I think the Shomrim should make reports, whenever Crown Heights residents file reports with the Police Department, with the names of the officers. Maybe Police reports will stop getting ‘lost’.

As the mom who called Chanina, I would like to say a few things.
1) Thank You Chanina for being there for us.
2) Thanks You officer Simonetti for taking immediate action for us.
3)Officer Martinos took the report. He stressed to me, that we MUST come in and file reports when such things happen. IF we have records of reports filed, even if there was no actual crime committed, enough reports can get a restraining order.
To commenter number 1, I would like to say, I agree, Chanina is an EDP Extremely Dependable Person. He was there for me, when I needed him. When the victim went into the police station she was blown off. I called Chanina, and suddenly things started happening. Right now this guy is on his way to a psych ward and will be treated there, and for today, I can sleep at night, and I can assess what is going on, and figure out what to do for tomorrow.

To Shomrim Reports, if people followed up on their police reports, and actually got a report number, maybe we could start a database with our copies of the police reports and their numbers,, and YOU R RIGHT! THe reports would not get lost anymore.

That said, I find it outrageous that the police dept is allowed to ignore victims and “lose” reports until someone who has “connections” calls in a favor.

This is really awful. Bad enough that the system is full of loopholes so that too often emotionally disturbed people who harass their neighbors and are a danger to others cannot be restrained,
but that people are “blown off” by the police when attempting to report crimes and have to resort to political muscle is a testament to how badly the NYPD needs fixing.
Btw, this is a system wide problem. This same scenario played itself out in a different precinct recently and made the news. women being harassed, being blown off at the local police station, lost police reports, a politician having to exert pressure,etc.
Unfortunately no substantive change will take place until there is some huge tragedy, impossible to sweep under the rug.
Shame on Commissioner Kelly who is not really addressing this problem. He could if he wanted to.

Do you realize that a lot of girls walk to Bais Rivka hrough Empire and Brooklyn. We need more protection for our girls during their walk to and from school. I see little kids walking and they are so vulnerable. Parents of BR Girls lets take action before CV something can happen to our girls.

The women have an order of protection. This man is not allowed near the womens’ homes. If he is there call 911 and tell them you have an order of protection from violent EDP and he is back. Shomrim can inquire with other Law Enforcement on this order of protection. Things will be on Camera again.

i live near there and if anything like that happened to me i will make sure that all tables are turned that he is not on the street. what is this business that they couldnt arrest him because they werent sure if he will do something violent???????????????? Why did the police have to get his family involved??????????????? When they became police didnt they train for just this kind of behavior?????????????? I’m just wondering what would have happened if the family wouldnt be able to convince him to surrendor. I guess we would have all been in a lot of danger but the police most probably would have done nothing unless someone got killed or he attacked the precinct. People that are a danger have no business being on the streets and I THOUGHT THAT IS WHAT THE POLICE JOB IS TO DO – TO PROTECT US!

The fact is Chanina Sperlin is an EDP whose highly medicated.
This whole “connection” thing Sperlin has is a myth. Any citizen with half a brain can have the same “connections” as does Sperlin.

I see no other reason (other then brown envelopes) why anybody would give Chanina Sperlin the time of day. He’s a shlump (a mess), he can’t communicate and like I wrote above, hes highly medicated.

Mr. Sperlin took part in an act of Mesira (As linked above comment #6). Mesira is most despicable act a Jew can do. The code of the Jewish law (Shulchan Aruch) has very strong words about what should happen to a Mosser.

Mr. Sperlin never asked Mechila from those he harmed as a result of his Mesira. Mr. Sperlin never made any effort to repay for the damage he caused as a result of his Mesira.
I have no absolutely no doubt that Chanina Sperlin made every effort (using his so called connections)to have the Shomrim Six arrested (2007-08) and then later prosecuted (2009-10).
Details of above claim have been discussed (in length) in the past on other web-sites.
By the way: Give one example of how Chanina Sperlin “has done so much for our community”. Just one!

Even if for good reason one does feel someone is a moser he has no right to speak Loshen Horah. By speaking Loshen Hora 3 people are harmed (as is stated in many many many places).
Second of all there may be more to a story than we know. All we know is what we are informed of, which in a lot of cases is only part of the story.
EVEN IF ONE KNOWS THAT THE PUBLIC KNOWS THE WHOLE STORY IT IS STILL LOSHEN HORA AND EACH AND EVERYONE OF THOSE PEOPLE NEEDS TO DEGRADE HIM/HERSELF TO ASK FORGIVNESS.
