Bloody ‘Night Out Against Crime’ in Crown Heights

CROWN HEIGHTS [CHI] — Traditionally, the first Tuesday of August is known as the National Night out against Crime, a night where residents come out of their homes and together with police ‘take back the streets’ from crime. This year it wasn’t so in 71st Precinct where a man was shot dead on Carroll Street and a Jew was attacked on Crown Street.

According to police sources Shawn Williams, a 26 year old black male, was shot multiple times on Nostrand Avenue and Carroll Street, just a block away from his home. The victim was rushed to Kings County Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. An investigation is ongoing.

Later on at around 11:00pm a tourist was assaulted on Crown Street and Brooklyn Avenue. The victim was visiting New York with his local Shliach and a group from Sao Paolo Brazil. Hatzalah was called and the victim was transported to Kings County Hospital with injuries to his face.

According to the victim his assailant was a black man who did not say anything to him, he simply struck him in the face as he walked passed him. The attacked did not take anything from the victim.

In the past the night out against crime was marked with great fanfare and united attendance from both the black and Jewish communities in Crown Heights. Mayor Michael Bloomberg attended the event hosted by the 71st Precinct alongside activists and Shomrim Volunteers, but this year the event went by without any notice to the Jewish communities.

Major crime is up in nearly every category in the 71st Precinct with Murder, up % 100, in the lead, followed closely by Rape, up % 62.5, Robbery up % 3.2, and Felony Assault up 18%. Overall though crime is down % 3.5 lead by auto breakins.

this year, we have to impress on our organizations to make sure the kids walk together to programs. Ahavas Yisrael ! The kids should feel comfortable walking with each other, they don’t have to be best friends. The Rebbe wants this.
Also, I am sad for this man who was killed. Are the responsible black community working on this as well?
They need social workers and other professionals to deal with the youth who are growing up w/out supervision and proper guidance.

Pretty slow coverage of an event that resulted in a crime scene that disrupted traffic in 20% of CH for at least four or five hours, and, evidently, led to an armed and dangerous character on the loose in the neighborhood. You are swift to publicize scandals and, in this case, slow to make anash aware of a very, very dangerous situation. Hope to see more responsible journalism in the future! Thanks for the rest of your work, which usually is very good.

Ah, the joys of New York and the Bloomberg administration which along with the liberal judges favor the rights of criminals over victims. And, you wonder why people leave New York?

  • CHANGE now

Get rid of Simonnetti, beef up 24 hour Shomrim patrols, and install an effective CHJCC who don’t hide under rocks & emerge for photo shoots but actually DO SOMETHING.

When tourists are assaulted, Bloomberg makes a big fuss & visits them in the hospital. Of course, that’s when they’re goyim. Jews he ignores.

I think that if the powers that be in our shchunah would flex enough muscle, WITHOUT making a lot of publicized noise, we might be able to get City and/or Federal funding for installation of a significant number of security cameras at strategic spots throughout the neighborhood.(Making a lot of noise would only minimize our chances of getting this type of funding since the politicians would be afraid they’d be accused of giving us preferential treatment if they were to approve such funding for us.) AFTER the cameras were installed I’d let the word out “to friend and foe alike” that our streets are being carefully monitored. This would surely make our streets safer, al pi tevah.
It would be nice to get a few of these cameras up before yomim noraiim when our streets are B”H filled with many visitors 24/7.

There is an old adage:”More Guns Less Crime: which has been proven. If word got around that there was well trained and well armed citizens walking the streets. They would not necessary needed to be used but the just the possiblity that the citizen will defend himself with this instrument sends a strong word. Perhaps, then the streets might become safer.
#11, how do you think they found the perp in Boro Park who kinapped and killed the boy.
Cameras will not prevent crimes because the criminal believes he will be able to get away but the threat and actual possiblity of a effective response will in most cases

i think as a young American i feel that the black community need to make peace and stop the violence against our own race. In additon, beacuse of the reckless behavior one of our fellow members was taken because of not thinking and not having value of human life. And i pray that from this day forward cops would be more involved in the streets and take more action in what is going on in our community.R.I.P Shawn Williams you would forever live in our memories

    sincerly yours,

If we want less crime then why have we stood by silently while so many industrial jobs were sent to China, and why do we continue to be silent while white collar jobs are sent to India today ?

When there are no jobs the tax base is eroded and the quality of the education system deteriorates. What do you expect when people have no hope and inadequate education ?
They steal, they deal drugs, they shoot it out on the street when they come into conflict.
