Police Downplaying Crime, Refuse to File Crime Report

CROWN HEIGHTS [CHI] — Once again allegations are being raised concerning the NYPD’s persistent downplaying crime. Officers from the 71st Precinct responded to a call of a stolen purse last week on President Street, but the responding officers refused to file a crime report for robbery, and instead they only filed a report for ‘lost property’. Video surveillance captured the robbery, yet police still refuse to take interest in the incident.

The incident took place on Monday, November 8th, in the lobby of an apartment building on President Street and Troy Avenue at exactly 4:36pm. The victim, a Jewish woman, who had just come home with her child in a stroller, and forgot her purse out in the open.

The thief, a large black male, was working in the building along with a buddy of his who lives in the building, they were moving furniture when apparently the big guy spotted the purse and took it, then just left the building.

The purse contained many important documents, credit cards, identification cards, and a large sum of cash.

The victim called 911 to report the theft, and when officers responded they asked if it was possible if she lost the purse, and maybe it wasn’t stolen. But the victim was adamant, saying that she took her keys out in order to get into the building. Nevertheless the cops took the report as lost property, and not as a crime.

After trying to get a copy of the video from the management the victim finally got it and immediately identified the pair, and remembered them working in the building that Monday.

He immediately took the footage over to the precinct and tried to give it to an officer there. The officer declined to take it, saying that he will add a note to the original report and if they need the video they will contact him.

Feeling as if he was being brushed off the victim contacted CrownHeights.info and provided his unbelievable story to us along with the video.

Police officers in the 71st precinct did not return calls for comment.

This behavior is not new…It has been going on for generations…
Victims of crimes have been getting the shaft, while the perpertartors of these crimes have been getting treated with kid gloves..
a result of the upside down legal system that has been tolersted in this country…
These misfits of society kmow the system and are sure that they can get away with these things and maybe if they are caught red handed they are back on the streets within a hour or two in the revolving door of justice or injustice as the case may be…
How can you ignore the fact that these people are under the influence of their yetzer hora and their animal instincts and not expect them to walk away with things that are not theirs ? It is quite natural for them to do so…and without remorse…!!!
Do not expect any help from the police – their capacity for chesed, rachamim and compassion is quite limited..
It is of the utmost importance not to leave any vauables unattended as sticky fingers are sure to follow …!!

It’s about time we hold our elected representatives (Vaad Hakohol) accountable if they can’t hold the police accountable.

I’m fed up with this attitude about playing with diplomacy with the police. They don’t understand that language, preferring to take prey of our weakness. Why can’t the vaad Hakohol once and for all stand up to the police and go down the legal channels to keep them in check. It may be hard work now but it will prevent a lot in the future.

i will assume he leaves in the building being that he took the effort to put something by recycyling, almost as if he was going down the stairs to throw out some garbage, at the top of the railing he saw the purse, casually took it and threw out the garbage.

  • enough is enough

Is there a community precinct meeting this Thursday? If so, I suggest we all go.

As for the Vaad Hakahal…does #3 Anonymous seriously expect them to do OR SAY anything? They are so in love with their own pathetic “power” they won’t step up to the plate.

I’m so disappointed in Hackner & Tamir. I didn’t expect anything else from Brownstein.

I think the only solution is to go to the media, and have them see the video and let them ask for an accounting from the 71st precinct. If every incident was given to the media and they followed up on it, the police might be forced in to doing the right thing. I think this should be done even if it cost the Vaad Hakohol money, in order for us to get the protection which we are entitled to, and we are not receiving.

And people ask, “So, why aren’t you a cop anymore? We need good police officers, who respect the Jews!” My reply? “Even good officers can’t get anything done with the constant culture of apathy in the department, which is virtually nationwide.”

No one cares. Few if any do their job and office politics prevents the do-gooders from doing what’s right. It’s a systemic problem. We might just as well hire the Chinese or the Indians to be our police. Why not!? They make or out-source everything else! This country is doomed.

  • disappointed with hackner and tamir

I agree with #6 regarding our local officials. Why not start taking these incidents to our city council members, perhaps the response will not be as apathetic.

The people of this community are at the mercy of opportunists, both in the 71st precinct and in the community council, who play politics and care little about the people they supposedly serve.

Looking forward to seeing a TV news clip about this incident being aired on this site.

go to the meetings video in hand go to the media as well.In addition tell the Vaad Hakahal if they refuse to do anything then residents should get together & file a civil rights lawsuit against the NYPD NYC & publicize every step.

  • BigBen

This is amazing. The proof is right in front of them and they refuse to take action.
Please come to the next Community Police meeting this Thurs Nov 18, 2010 and you can hear Noocchi Gross perforate the invocation, then Mr. Balberg bumble thru the minutes of the previous meeting then Mr. Coen profusely thank the cops for the job they are not doing, all the while BIG Simponnety sits there and knows he is getting away with it.
We need new elections. Hackner is nowhere to be found. Zaki is fundraising (panhandling) for the new Rav. What about our safety?

How about hiring licensed, reputable movers who are listed with the BBB? Even better, don’t leave your purse unattended in a hall way?! This is New York City, not New Utopia!

  • Justice_For_No_One

Maybe the cops are waiting until you do a citizen’s arrest on the 2 guys and bring them into the jail for them. Cops don’t want to do any work anymore, and why should they? They can just sit on the side of the highway pulling people over for anything they want and writing tickets for obscure laws. They have a great racket going and can’t be bothered with real crime!!!
