CHK Releases Important Kashrus Notice After Questionable Mint Given Out at Crown Heights Event

by CrownHeights.info

At a beautiful Yud Tes Kislev event held in Crown Heights, a party favor, mint gum, was handed out to the attendees. According to the CHK though, the Hechsher is not recomended.

“In response to numerous inquiries we received, the Crown Heights Kashrus (CHK) wishes to inform the community about our policy regarding Triangle K kashrus supervision,” the CHK wrote in a letter to the community. “Products bearing Triangle-K certification are not considered acceptable under CHK standards, in accordance with common standards across Kashrus agencies.”

The issue stems not just from general policy, according to Kashrus experts, but also from one of the ingredients in the gum. Magnesium Stearate, an ingredient found in medicines and other specialty foods, can be made from animal fat, with pork fat as one of the options.

“This decision is based solely on CHK’s internal kashrus guidelines and protocols,” the letter from the CHK explains. “The CHK is responsible for ensuring that all products used in our community meet the standards we have established.”

For guidance on acceptable certifications or questions about kosher products, please contact the CHK office directly at office@chkosher.org.

“We remain committed to providing clear and reliable guidance to maintain the highest standards of kashrus in our community,” they wrote.
