CHK Releases Important Kashrus Notice After Questionable Mint Given Out at Crown Heights Event

by CrownHeights.info

At a beautiful Yud Tes Kislev event held in Crown Heights, a party favor, mint gum, was handed out to the attendees. According to the CHK though, the Hechsher is not recomended.

“In response to numerous inquiries we received, the Crown Heights Kashrus (CHK) wishes to inform the community about our policy regarding Triangle K kashrus supervision,” the CHK wrote in a letter to the community. “Products bearing Triangle-K certification are not considered acceptable under CHK standards, in accordance with common standards across Kashrus agencies.”

The issue stems not just from general policy, according to Kashrus experts, but also from one of the ingredients in the gum. Magnesium Stearate, an ingredient found in medicines and other specialty foods, can be made from animal fat, with pork fat as one of the options.

“This decision is based solely on CHK’s internal kashrus guidelines and protocols,” the letter from the CHK explains. “The CHK is responsible for ensuring that all products used in our community meet the standards we have established.”

For guidance on acceptable certifications or questions about kosher products, please contact the CHK office directly at office@chkosher.org.

“We remain committed to providing clear and reliable guidance to maintain the highest standards of kashrus in our community,” they wrote.

is Vintage Flavored Seltzer that is sold in most Crown Heights stores acceptable with Triangle K kosher certification?

    • S

I used to never drink the flavoured ones but then I found that they are on both the ok and crc lists for acceptable drinks

    • Yossi

To S, Most flavors are not on those lists. until recently both lists had different flavors included and were not matching. today they both match each other. again see “Kosher in the Know” posted on Chabad WebSites that our Rabbanim (including Rabbi Y Braun stated), wrote that Flavored Vintage Seltzer is not approved. if one has lower standards that is up to each individual.

It’s unfortunate that someone was Motzei Shem Ra and spread a rumor that the candy was trief. The organizers spent hours putting together such a meaningful event and were harassed the entire 24 hours after the event about these mints. This same ingredient is in many other candies that ppl consume. The ingredient used is kosher, regardless if triangle k is a good hechsher.

Kashrus agencies say that it’s no good, because it’s often sourced from non-kosher animal fat. “Chani,” a commenter whose credentials and expertise are unknown, says that “it’s kosher.” Hm, whom to believe?

Ralbag gives HashGacha to Hebrew National non-glatt meat products, is this also “Kosher”, Chanie?

Many people use the same type of meat products with reliable HashGachas. This does not grant Ralbags Triangle K as reliable for…. Vintage Flavored Seltzer & anything else that requires a reliable HeCh’sher.

Anything that requires reliable HeCh’sher always does even if it’s ingredients are similar

I heard from a reliable source that all food items that don’t require a hechsher CAN have a Triangle K hechsher!

  • Tsvi

Rabbi Aryeh Ralbag of the Triangle K is an Adam Gail. He lives in Brooklyn. Pick up the phone and call him. Before you lop al Chet, call him!

    • BG

One may be an Adam Gadol and still use leniencies in halachah that mainstream poskim don’t accept. One may be an Adam Gadol and not know all the intricacies of kashrus, the corners that manufacturers and workers might cut, etc. etc.

It’s an old story of lashing hara. The entire world trusts him for gittin which is far more complex. What they don’t like is that he gives hashgacha to non Glatt meat. Until the rise of Satmar everyone ate non Glatt. I know a mashgiach for the triangle K and they have high standards.

To all dose that are saying don’t say things about hechsherim and Rabbi Aryeh Ralbag is a Odom Godal. Why don’t you first find out to whom Triangle K gives a hechsher to? and then we can discuss if we can realy on the Triangle K as a hechsher. For one hebrew national

  • Doctor Ben

What an irony! The magnesium stearate that’s under question wad certified by the ok labs which is a LUBAVICH run reliable kashrus agency!
