Montreal Principal Resigns After 25 Years of Service
MONTREAL, Canada [CHI] — CrownHeights.info has learned that longtime Montreal school principal Rabbi Yossi Sputz has resigned. There is no stated reason behind the announcement, and this development comes along with rumors about other major changes coming to the embattled school.
In a letter dated earlier this week from school administrator Shimi Traurig, he announced Rabbi Sputz’s resignation at the end of the school year. “…[He] worked tirelessly for the talmidim throughout the years… we thank him sincerely, and wish him Hatzlacha Rabba” the letter states.
The news of the resignation leaves Montreal parents wondering what will be in the coming school year. Who will take the newly opened principal position? and who will be teaching their children in the coming year?
The school, Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim Lubavitch, has been in turmoil for a number of years over financial troubles, including large debt and monies owed to the government. These troubles were compounded by the fact that the community has grown exponentially and there are significantly more children in the school.
Over the past year, many parents have noted a positive change in the school after Shimi Trautig took the position of administrator as a volunteer. A new Vaad Hachinuch was formed, and together they have been steadfastly attempting to instill change in the moisad.
Rumors about more change, and the firing of teachers as well, have been swirling, but no official word from the school has yet emerged.
CrownHeights.info will continue to track this developing story.

what about rabbi Wenger (Mordy)???
Sorry to hear that!!!
There goes another Yeshiva!
other major changes
none of this will help at all until Zushe removes himself totally from the face of our school system
..
Mordy Wenger is not qualified for this position. He has been a complete disaster at the yeshiva gedolah level and can use his tremendous talents in other roles.
Where do you get your info from?
to #3:
Zushe is not involved in Yeshiva anymore!!!
...
TO #3 well put!
old student
there is so much more to this story the people behind the scens are a disaster [to put it in a nice way]you cant have a shoe maker tell a baker how to make a cake.what a shame on the school
teacher from O-T
a few years back someone was running it well
Alumni
A lot of children (now married) keep saying that Rabbi Sputz is a very good person. He was the ONLY ONE who respected every Talmid, no matter his level in learning or behavior or backround or money.
He is to many the symbol of Derech Erets. Maybe with more help and less criticism, he would of do even better !
Think Twice
Maybe all the ones that went through yeshivas and are supposed tobe examples to our children should think for 2 seconds before commenting. Then everyone screams AD MOSAI where is moshiach. What about alll the Loshon Hora?
Yosy
Now we need to fire Rabbi Shneur and all of the other worthless garbage masquerading as teachers!
#4
#4 is probably a parent of some pure, innocent bochur whose couldn’t get accepted to any yeshivah, until he ended up in Montreal, where he was endlessly persecuted by the Mashgiach for doing nothing but sitting in the internet cafe all day, and watching movies on his ipod.
EX-Montreal
he didnt resign, he was fired. the “new vaad chinuch” wantd him out years ago, and he finally gave in.
its a pity, he was well liked by all talmidim and melamdim, too bad the “vaad” didnt see it.
q is, how can u get “rid” of a principal without having an immediate replacement?
good luck to the kids and their parents!

Well said! Rabbi Sputz is the ONLY ONE in the Yeshiva who always treated EVERYONE: Talmidim, Melamdim, and all staff members with extreme dignity, Derech Eretz, respect and Mentschlichkeit. He developed a Kesher with every Talmid and is a true example to everyone of what the definition of a Mentsch and a Chossid is! He will be very much missed. Sad to see him go. May he have lots of Hatzlocha in all his future endeavors. May the Aibishter pay him back in great measure for all the good he has done over the years and for all the Talmidim that he has impressed and still have a very good image of him!
SHAME ON THE BORED SOUL WHO POSTED THIS ONLINE!!!
Support Shimi!
to #12: the new vaad hachinuch is only 1 year old, since shimi came in,
before everyone starts accusing, let’s remember the yeshiva was about to CLOSE because of bankruptcy before Shimi came in voluntarily, anyone could have done what he did, but he cared enough to do it, so now let’s support him!!!!!
??????
to #11:
what you say may be true, that still does not make him qualified!!!!
very sad
The parents are the ones at fault, they are the ones who need to unite to get things done and make a difference , they pay tuition, they have the power to change things. The problem is noone cares, they are not united. they take care of their own and leave the rest to hang.
Talmid
Rabbi Sputz has many qualities as stated in other comments. Among all of his qualities, he is a Mentsh. The unfortunate reality is that, often, Chassidishkeit and Mentshelechkeit do not go hand in hand. The Rebbe is the ultimate role-model of Mentshlechkeit. For some reason, some Chassidim feel that criticizing and putting down students is the way to make them into Chassidim. This attitude unfortunately turned many wonderful and talented students away from Darchei HaChassidus and Yiddishkeit Rachmono Litzlan. As someone who went through the Montreal school system and was a Talmid of Rabbi Sputz, I can say with confidence that Rabbi Sputz remains to be a role-model in my life. He never put down a student. He respected Melamdim and students equally. People respected rabbi Sputz because of who he was, not because of the position he held. No job was degrading for Rabbi Sputz. If he would see a wrapper on the floor, he would bend down and pick it up, instead of yelling at students.
On a different note, I think that before people make it to the Vaad HaChinuch, they need to go to educational seminars and workshops and learn something about education.
I hope that the Montreal community will work harder to retain its talented and wonderful individuals in the future and stop focusing on non-sense and Machlokes.
messy
They had a great principle a few years back, they did not appreciate him, too much politics! they need to put the children’s education FIRST and then they might do it right.
anon
What a pity rabbi sputz was the only thing that kept me going
all my years in yeshiva its a shame that the montreal community can’t get there act together and give recognition where its well deserved
Yossi
Now let Moshe Ezagui do what he started doing a few years ago
with great successes.
Dont overdue it! Stop the hate!
For all those that are yelling and venting, relax. I was a student in the yeshiva, and was thrown out off class/school a few or more times. and Rabbi Sputz gave me the proper attention and had a listening ear for me. he did not fly off the handle and go wiled like some other people in the school system do. and I commend him for that.
for those that say “get rid of the worthless people masquerading as teachers”. hold on. there are no other staff that have as many chassidishe teachers and yerei shomaim like in that school. dont you know of the story of Reb michoel Bliner? if you dont then you have no opinion. rabbi shneur gave us the varemkeit of chassidus with his stories and farbreingens etc. I commend him for that aswell. look out far and wide and try to find a group that rabbi sputz said himself that we were one of the hardest turned out the best.
In Denial??????
Not one of these comments addresses the issue that students in Yeshiva can’t READ, WRITE or LEARN properly
Yosy
Post 16, not sure I understand. Rabbi Sputz, in my opinion, wasn’t very effective, but wasn’t too bad either. The problem is that there are individuals ‘teaching’?? at the yeshiva that should have been fired (or arrested) years ago. I took my kids out and sent them to Toronto in order not to deal with the vermin. While the vaad hachinuch is trying, now they need to fire the teachers and get a qualified staff. Of course, who knows how they will be able to afford this…..
to #22
give me a break, there are no Reb Michoel Bliner’s in that yeshiva or anywhere nowadays for that matter,
as per the Rebbe’s opinon, the Rebbe held that the interests of the RABIM overtake the YACHID, our children deserve EXCELLENCE and nothing less
Not like CH
Stop tryimg to turn Montreal into Crown Heights#2. All this article acomplishes, is generating hate & Loshon Hora.
Montreal is a community of a few hundred families it does NOT have to be broken up like the joke Crown Heights has become.
Alumnus
I say bring back Rabbi Feigelshtock! “Zik, you can’t listen to your ipod in de middle of class…” (My knuckles still hurt.)
On a serious note, Rabbi Sputz will be missed. He is a true mentch, a refined person.
You would have done better to close the school down and start from fresh. Maybe a little secular education will solve the money issues – some funds from the government + alumni that will be able to pay higher tuitions.

who says the students dont know how to read, write and learn?
a bunch of my bros went through YTTL system and are capable of all 3! whered u get that idea.
to #26;
i dont think this article is trying to make mtl into CH. i think ppl have to start looking out the windows alot less and doing alot more.
mtl has always been a smaller community but yet lacks unity the same way CH does.
so until our rabbonim get their act together, how can we even think that the bottom ppl, us, will be able to unite?
PROUD MONTREALER
AS A PARENT IN THE SCHOOL, I WOULD LIKE TO GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE. IF IT WASN’T FOR SHIMMIE WHO TOOK OVER THE OLD HANHOLA(WHICH INCLUDED RABBI SPUTZ) OUR SCHOOL WOULD NOT HAVE OPENED THIS YEAR.
FOR ALL THE PEOPLE REMEMBERING WHAT A GREAT PERSON RABBI SPUTZ IS AND WHAT BEAUTIFUL MIDDOS HE HAS, AND HOW HE RESPECTED EVERYONE, LETS NOT FORGET THE FACT ,THAT THAT DOES NOT QUALIFY HIM TO BE A PRINCIPAL. A PRINCIPAL HAS TO BE A LEADER WHO CAN LEAD HIS FACULTY AND STAFF, NOT JUST SMILE AND BE NICE TO EVERYONE.
a hopeful parent
Kudos to #23, yes Rabbi Sputz is a real mentch and a wonderful person. We are living in very different times now, and need real leadership! Our boys must walk out with an education….we need someone who will IMPLEMENT a proper curriculum for the year 2011….. Unfortunately it is a known fact that our school is 50years behind the times.
So thank you to Shimmi, David and the rest of the new board for stepping in we are all behind you and wish you much success

Everyone screams Ad Mosai when bad news appear. When everyone will stop talking Loshon Horaha dnmaking Chilul Hashem and Lubavitch, maybe Hashem will also say Ad Mosai.

Today marks a very sad day in the calendar for the montreal community…..first we hear abt this and now we hear that in Beth Rivkah they are taking off all religion from the preschool and all religious symbols….what will b next?
literate & proud to be so
To #30: maybe #23 got that idea by seeing the illiterate drivel you penned. You’re not exactly a grammarian, are you?
What is going on???
Rabbi Sputz is a real mentsch and has a good relationship with the talmidim in the yeshiva, this is going to be a great loss! The Montreal community is falling apart; people don’t care for one another. When a community is like one nothing can happen… The chinuch in Montreal is a disaster, first this and then we hear that we are taking out religious item from the girls’ preschool??? We need to stick up for our religion as our ancestors did and NOT give in to goyishe authority! It is a shame and embarrassment that people who do not know the first thing about chinuch are heading schools… Unfortunately, money is what’s important…
Rabbi Sputz will be missed
Rabbi Sputz is an incredible person and everyone should learn from his mentchlekeit. It is a pity for the Montreal community you just lost a wonderful principal who will never be able to be replaced.
Chinuch
Chinuch is no joke! This needs to be taken seriously… Anyone can decide these days that they want to teach or be principal of a school with absolutely no idea on how to act with the youth!!!
To # 31
To # 31:
Paraphrasing your words:“we are all behind you etc.”
First of all, who is the ALL? You should talk for yourself only! And second of all, who are Shimmi and David and what kind of educational/Chinuch backgroung do they have to have named themselves Hanholas Hayeshiva?!?
a parent
As a parent with children in the institution i would like to point out a few things:
1. B“H the school is not as bad as people make it sound, it does have its issues but its not all that bad, at the end of the day (with siyata d’shmaya) most talmidim turn out to be chasidishe and good bochurim. the issues start with the non-average children.
2. as in any institution many things can be done to improve the issues that do exist, and in the case of our Yeshiva, the priciple should have had a much larger role in dealing with these issues, but was unfortunately tied up with too many other tasks and did not deal properly with the real important issues (he did usually give a sweet talk to try resolve issues – but generally no solid action). As mentioned many times in the comments, he is a real mentch and I have never had any issues with him, but perhaps there was something missing in yeshiva that is usually a pricple’s task – such as telling off or directing certain teachers when they need ”guidance“.
3. for a few years a vice pricple was brought into Yeshiva and he really shaped the place up! no more children running in the hallways, no more dirt in the hallways, the children showed derech eretz, programs for chassidishe yomim tovim, etc. unfortunately, there were some ”wealthy“ parents with children who have no active parents in their lives (or they simply can’t controll their children), who this assisted priciple tried to help and teach the children to be mentchen, and the outcome was that the vice priciple was removed from his position – unfortunately, the yeshiva today regressed to the times before Rabbi Ezagui was there. TIP: get rabbi ezagui back, the yeshivah would be so much better.
4. there were also many melamdim who got the ”Pink Slip“ – some perhaps deserved it, others just happened to have a ”challenged“ board members child in their class and did not deal with the child properly, so it cost them their job – to this I say if there would be a priciple to guide the teachers and help them deal with difficult students, and if all parents would take some responsibility in the upbringing of their children and work with the teachers, the Yeshiva wouldn’t just be good, it would be great!
not every parent/student/teacher is a chemistry that goes well together, hopefully whoever will come as priciple, will have the qualities to be able to deal with these cases. and hopefully this new priciple will not come ”Highly recommended” as a previous attempt for a replacement to Rabbi Ezagui.
In summary, since the Yeshivah is looking for a priciple, and they have a great candidate right there in front of their eyes – I would say this would be a great start.
WE WANT R- MOSHE EZAGUI
R’ MOSHE EZAGUI WOULD BE GREAT FOR THE JOB WHEN HE WAS RUNNING THE SHOW THERE WERE MANY CHASSIDISHEH PROGRAMS RUNNING AND EVERYONE KNOW THAT IT WAS NOT THE Gniwisch OR ANY OTHER FAMILY IN MONTREAL THAT DONATED THE MONEY FOR THESE PROGRAMS R’ MOSHE EZAGUI WOULD FUND RAISE ALL THE MONEY BY HIM SELF.
dovid
It is a well known fact that in eighth grade you learn. in rabbi shneur’s class there is no fooling around. you actualy learn. i don’t know who you are, but you seem to have some personal grudge with rabbi shneur, as no self respecting person would publicy disparage another while hiding behind the cloak of anonymity. many parents in montreal are grateful to rabbi shneur for their chasidishe kinder, and for their kids ability to learn.
vey vey
the problem is that i have a feeling that many decisions are being made without the vaad hachinuch by people who lack experience in the chinuch field
montreal bochur
1st of all I must say that I will be very surprised if anyone can replace Rabbi Sputz. He always showed care and concern for every Talmid, was very Metshlich. Picking up wrappers is just one example of his unmatched Mentshlichkeit. However, as a principal, I`m not so sure he really accomplished as far as making sure there was a proper curicilum and Derech being taught in the school. it was more something like “Ish kol hayoshor beinov yaase” – if a teacher wanted to teach, he taught. but in most cases it ended up with extra recess. But at the end of the day, he still is a very special man. RABBI SPUTZ YOU ROCK!!!
Change
Change is sometimes difficult, but positive change fosters positive growth. Instead of writing loshon hora, which our children are reading thus diminishing their respect for all adults, let us be proactive to make this change a positive one; one that will unite our community and improve our children’s chinuch. Some ideas: 1)Share positive ideas with the new vaad; they know the negative – they’re 60 years old; 2)stop kvetching and throwing comments that breed hatred and bad feelings. That is what divides a community and creates machlokes…If you have nothing good to say, better not to say anything at all. 3) You may not know the complete picture; you may be venting about one fact while you are ignorant of 20 others. Support those who are volunteering their time and energy to create positive change. Trust that they know the whole picture and are making decisions based on this knowledge. 4)In your thoughts, speech and actions, remember that our children are our priority, not our yeshus. Keep this in mind even while chatting with a friend. Negativity is from klipa and is a poison that destroys.
Hatzlacha to positive change!

M. ezagui has no “shprach” with kids. he was “very good” at patroling the hallways and giving out punishments right left and center.
our kids need teachers and a principal to be on top of the teachers, not traffic cops

its all politics,,,
ezagui was the best for the job, and turned that place over….the solution is simple…get him back on board.

Montrealer
Lots of parents and people commented and have their fair share of critism, yet Shimi and David volunteered and turned up at the yeshiva to donate their time and help. They give tirelessly of themselves. Everyone will always have a negative comment regardless. How many others turned up at yeshiva and said, I am here, please utilize me? Mentschen mach min shlecht.
Rabbi Sputz who is no doubt a wonderful person and truly cares, knew it was time to pass the torch. There should be other teachers who have the sensibility to know when it is time to move on, just as Rabbi Sputz did, and not be stuck in archaic times with archaic ways of teaching talmidim, and total chaos ensues.
There is a wonderful teacher, who is blossoming and continuing to grow as a teacher, yet when he was in a different role was a disaster and reminiscent of Gestapo.
The yeshiva’s downfall was not done in one day, therefore its recovery does not take one day. The hanholoh have made great strides and raised money and funds, and ARE improving our yeshiva to ensure a proper education for our children, and the children of tomorrow. Why not stand behind Shimi and David instead of standing at the sidelines with your list of complaints?
true chinuch
there is a saying
‘the only way to teach is by example’ rabbi sputz is a true mechanech he taught by example his students and staff and any social worker etc that worked with him were inspired by him and in sawe of him
to all those supporters and smart people that think they know everything put your money where your mouth is
the yeshiva needs your money not your smart ideas so they can pay a principal and an assistant and a curriculum director so each can focus in his area and accomplish more .
good luck to anyone who takes over. rabbi sputz did the job of three people or more. how he was able to do this was only because of his true love and care for the talmidim and the rebbe mosad. he is truly an incredible person
i am happy for him that he can move on to bigger and better. i wish all the best to rabbi sputz i will forever be grateful for that which you gave my children

Too bad for the Yeshiva. Unfortunately it appears as though the decision to replace Rabbi Sputz is coming from businessmen who are not sensitive to what Chinuch is all about. As the structure of a Yeshiva grows, it is unquestionable that it needs the proper amount of staff to man the size and needs of the Yeshiva. Rabbi Sputz was not given an assistant principal for years, a basic concept in the simplest of any school. He was left to take care of all aspects of running the school singlehandedly including curriculum, training teachers, dealing with discipline issues parents and then the challenge of children who have special needs and many more factors that are part of any school system. Rabbi Sputz is an unquestionable talelented individual who portrays leadership with respect, dignity and mentchlichkeit to all the the above people he had to deal with and many many more involved with the Yeshiva. Wiser efforts by the vaad would have been to provide him with the supports of an assistant principal whom they should have invested efforts in identifying and perhaps share the overwhelming burden of running the Yeshiva. His qualities of a dugma chaya of a Chassidishe mentshlicher role model are very difficult to come by and as anyone in Chinuch knows children learn by example. If they werent seeing the right example in their homes at the minimum they would have a dugma chaya for life to tap into. I would strongly encourage the vaad to revisit their position and beg Rabbi Sputz to reconsider his resignation, provide him with the necessary supports to make the challenges that are true to any entity work out.

Honestly, I have visited Montreal for a few days, I was in yeshiva shul one morning for shachris, and was approached by the principal to tutor a class.
He needed a teacher for the same day, one of his teachers just didn’t show up, I had some time and agreed for a few hours, boy – was I in for a surprise, teachers just have no plan, principal had no clue what the class is learning, yes he is a VERY nice person, but the SCHOOL is a disaster.
A principal has to be on top of things, teachers who are not doing there job, have to be trained in, worked with etc. and if they have issues that cannot be fixed, and yes its the principals job to let the teacher go.
parents have to feel, that when a problem exist, someone is there to help them.

As I know someone very involved with the real situation on the ground, I can tell you that most of the comments above have no clue as to the real situation as it presents itself on a day to day basis. If the parents in the community would stop treating the Yeshiva as a babysitting service and actually showed interest in their children’s CHINNUCH the Yeshiva would be doing much better. Instead of complaining about how bad things are, try paying full tuition or offering your help it would go much further than your comments.
Good directors, teachers, curriculum and programs cost money. How about looking in the mirror before patting yourself on the back for the compliments you are showering on RS (deserved or not) and ask yourself if you are truly doing the most you can in any way YOU can to help the Yeshiva. (save the complaints and send some money to help out those that are really trying to make a difference in your son’s chinnuch)
go bais rivkah!!!
look at bais rivakh in montreal! it looks like even thogh they have their problems they still manage to work things out and the floors are mopped!
Abbot and Costello
Decisions are still made behind the scenes with no accountabilty. They changed the face of the institution without changing who controls things behinds the curtains.
Every number of years some new group, or new person comes in and “saves” the yeshiva. They reshuffled the deck, move money from one pile to another, and buy the yeshiva a little more time financially. But little to nothing is done from an educational stand point, and what is done is by less than qualified individuals behind secret doors.
If it wasn’t so sad, it would be funny.
