“Tefilah LeDavid”: Marina Roscha Releases New Musical Project for the High Holy Days

With the month of Elul underway and the Jewish community preparing for the High Holy Days, the Marina Roscha Central Synagogue in Moscow has unveiled a major new musical project designed to help worshippers connect more deeply with the tefillos of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

The album, titled “Tefilah LeDavid,” was produced at the initiative of Russia’s Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Berel Lazar, and marks the 100th anniversary of the Marina Roscha Jewish community.

The project was entrusted to the synagogue’s Chief Cantor, Rabbi David Caytak, who selected some of the most beloved prayer segments, traditional nuschaos, and melodies that have been sung in the Marina Roscha sanctuary over the years.

The musical arrangements were created by composer and musician Rabbi Elor Velner, who crafted the album with a blend of traditional Chassidic melodies and contemporary musical production.

The goal of the project extends beyond producing a cantorial album. Rabbi Lazar envisioned “Tefilah LeDavid” as a tool to help Jews prepare for the High Holy Days and arrive at the long and meaningful tefillos with a greater familiarity and emotional connection.

For many members of Russian Jewry who did not grow up with a strong Jewish educational or synagogue background, the melodies of the tefillos can be unfamiliar. Becoming acquainted with the niggunim and prayer melodies before Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur can help transform the experience from one of unfamiliarity into a meaningful and uplifting spiritual journey.

The album features 12 carefully selected tracks drawn from the tefillos of the High Holy Days.

Among the selections are “Avinu Malkeinu” in the Chabad tradition, a sweeping medley of High Holy Day prayers, as well as “Hineni He’ani Mima’as,” “Kol Nidrei,” “Ki Hineh Kachomer,” “Haben Yakir Li,” and “Tiher Rabbi Yishmael.”

The album also includes moving performances of “Ve’al Yedei Avadecha,” “Ya’aleh,” “Ki Anu Amecha,” and “Ata Hivdalta.”

Each track was arranged to capture the atmosphere of the Days of Awe as experienced in the Marina Roscha synagogue, combining the traditional melodies of the community with a polished musical production.

As Russian Jewry approaches Rosh Hashanah, “Tefilah LeDavid” is being presented not simply as another Chassidic or cantorial album, but as a tool of Shlichus—using music to prepare Jews for the holiest days of the year and open their hearts to tefillah.

The Marina Roscha community hopes that the melodies will inspire listeners throughout Russia and beyond, awakening hearts to teshuvah, strengthening their connection to Yiddishkeit, and bringing a year of blessing, success, and revealed good to all of Klal Yisroel.
