CHJCC Urges Tishrei Guests: Don’t Travel Without Medical Insurance
As thousands of guests prepare to travel to Crown Heights for Tishrei, the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council (CHJCC) is urging visitors to take one important step before leaving home: purchase adequate medical travel insurance.
The warning comes from experience. Each Tishrei, medical emergencies arise involving visitors from overseas, and when a guest does not have proper insurance, an already frightening situation can quickly become a serious financial crisis.
Medical care in the United States can be extremely expensive. A hospital stay, emergency procedure or other unexpected treatment can result in bills reaching thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars. Without appropriate coverage, families can face devastating expenses, and lack of coverage can also complicate access to certain follow-up care and treatment.
“We are asking every Tishrei guest to take this seriously,” said Shmuly Rosenstein, Acting Chairman of CHJCC. “We have seen too many situations where people came without proper insurance and a medical emergency became a financial crisis as well. For the relatively small cost of travel insurance, this is a risk nobody should be taking.”
CHJCC is emphasizing that this needs to be taken care of before departure, not after arriving in Crown Heights.
Travelers should make sure their policy provides adequate medical coverage in the United States, remains in effect for their entire stay, and covers every member of the family traveling. They should also understand the policy’s limits, deductibles, exclusions and what to do if emergency care is needed.
“Please don’t wait until there is an emergency,” Rosenstein added. “Before you get on the plane, make sure you and your family are covered. A few dollars spent before traveling can potentially prevent tremendous hardship later.”
CHJCC is asking Shuls, Mosdos, travel organizers and community WhatsApp groups around the world to help get the message to Tishrei guests before they leave home.
