When Sammy’s* father was incarcerated, his life was upended overnight. Friends stopped calling. Relatives pulled away. And Sammy’s mother was left to carry it all alone.
Aleph became their quiet anchor. We helped with groceries and provided financial support, advocated for Sammy’s father, and connected Sammy and his mother with our Angels—licensed social work interns who checked in weekly and gave them someone to lean on.
Then Sammy’s Bar Mitzvah approached. With it came a new set of worries. Who would come? How would they afford it? And the question Sammy wanted answered most: Would his father be there?
Aleph didn’t hesitate. We covered the photographer, caterer, and event planner, and our staff showed up in full force. And through relentless advocacy, Aleph secured the one gift that mattered most: a furlough for Sammy’s father to be in the room that day, watching his son become a man.

Aleph helps cover airfare so a child can finally run into the arms of a parent behind bars. Aleph makes sure a soldier stationed far from home has kosher food, tefillin, a rabbi to turn to, and a Jewish community that reaches across the miles.
It is practical support. It is human dignity. And, beneath it all, is a simple message: You are still one of us. You have not been forgotten. Whatever you need, we will do everything we can to be there.
