Major Fire Erupts at Agri Star Meat Plant in Postville, Iowa
Multiple fire departments from across northeast Iowa responded Tuesday morning to a major fire at the Agri Star Meat & Poultry processing plant in Postville, sending heavy smoke into the air and prompting smoke advisories for neighboring communities.
The fire broke out in the early morning hours at the facility, which is the largest employer in the city of Postville. Thick black smoke could be seen pouring from the plant as firefighters from numerous surrounding departments worked to bring the blaze under control. As of Tuesday afternoon, no injuries had been publicly reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Allamakee County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that multiple fire departments were called to the scene, while the City of Postville urged residents to conserve water as firefighters continued battling the fire using the municipal water system.
The Fayette County Emergency Management Agency also issued a smoke advisory, warning that winds were carrying smoke into Fayette County, including the Clermont area.
In a statement released Tuesday morning, Agri Star said emergency crews have been on-site since the fire began.
“A fire is currently active at our facility in Postville, Iowa. Emergency crews have been on-site since early this morning and are actively working to contain the fire. The safety of our team members, emergency responders, and the surrounding community remains our highest priority. Tuesday’s fire is the latest in a string of serious incidents at the Postville meatpacking facility.
In May 2026, firefighters from several northeast Iowa departments responded to an overnight fire inside the plant’s boiler and mechanical room. That blaze was contained to a limited section of the facility, and no injuries were reported.
The facility also experienced a significant explosion in 2021, which injured two employees and resulted in Iowa OSHA citations totaling more than $28,000 following an investigation into workplace safety violations.
Agri Star has also faced ongoing environmental scrutiny in recent years, including wastewater discharge issues and legal actions related to pollution concerns.
Agri Star serves as the economic backbone of Postville, employing hundreds of workers and playing a central role in the local economy. Any prolonged interruption in operations could have significant economic implications for the community.
Emergency crews remained on scene Tuesday as they continued suppression efforts and worked to protect unaffected portions of the sprawling processing complex. Officials have not yet provided an estimate of the damage or indicated when the fire may be fully extinguished.
