53 Kashrus Insights by Rabbi Hanoka

Last week Kollel Anash of Crown Heights had the honor of hosting another kashrus shiur by Rabbi Yitzchok Hanoka. Rabbi Hanoka serves as the Senior Rabbinic coordinator in the tri-state region at OK Kosher. For many years he worked hand in hand under the direction of his esteemed father-in-law, Rabbi Don Yoel Levy AH, the longtime kashrus administrator of the OK.

In this shiur, Rabbi Hanoka shared general kashrus acumen accumulated from many years of kashrus experience. He delivered a collection of 53 insights he learned from working under the direction of Rabbi Don Yoel Levy. As well as from senior OK mashgichim – Rabbi Dovid Steigman and Rabbi Eliezer Teitelbaum AH.

Rabbi Hanoka told a story which occurred when the famous kashrus expert Rabbi Chaim Tzvi Goldzweig went into Yechidus with the Rebbe around fifty years ago. The Rebbe asked Rabbi Goldzweig to speak about kashrus with Neshei Chabad. Rabbi Goldzweig demurred saying what he can possibly teach them – they are yirei shomayim. The Rebbe responded: they are stringent in areas where one does not need to be and are lenient in areas where one should not be.

It is important that we gain a deeper insight into how hechsheirim operate. This way we can invest our efforts in the right direction.
