Weekly Dvar Torah: 50 Years Later — The Twelve Pesukim, Finally Understood

Marking the fiftieth anniversary of the Rebbe’s introduction of the first six of the 12 Pesukim, it becomes clear that these were never meant as mere verses for children to chant. They are, in truth, the Rebbe’s precise prescription for a healthy, joyful, and purposeful life. Perhaps when they were first given, their depth was not fully appreciated — the language of emotional struggle, inner conflict, and psychological healing was not yet part of everyday conversation. But today, as the world has become more aware of these inner battles, we can finally recognize what the Rebbe embedded within these Pesukim: a timeless roadmap for navigating life itself.

The 12 Pesukim — 50 Years Later — A Prescription for Life

Let me begin with something personal.

For years, I carried this inside me.

Not as an idea — but as something alive. Something urgent. Something I knew was essential for our children… and, as I later realized, for every single one of us.

And now, fifty years after the project of the 12 Pesukim was introduced, the time has come to say it clearly:

The 12 Pesukim are not just verses for children.
They are the Rebbe’s blueprint for a healthy, joyful, purposeful life.

A Cry — And an Answer

There was a moment — not so long ago — when things became very dark.

Confusion. Emptiness. Even despair.

People were asking:
• Do we still have direction?
• Do we still have guidance?
• What are we living for?

Some went searching. Some lost their footing. Some felt they were falling apart inside.
And then, something remarkable happened.
A gathering. A cry from the community. A desperate turning upward — Rebbe, help us.

And shortly after, something almost impossible:
A Sicha — edited by the Rebbe decades earlier — suddenly surfaced.
Not just any Sicha.
A Sicha from 5736, connected to the moment the Rebbe introduced the second half of the 12 Pesukim… hidden for 38 years… and revealed exactly when it was needed most.
Like the Posuk says:
A letter arrived… long after it was written.
This was our letter.

What Did the Rebbe Give Us?

To understand the answer, we have to go back fifty years.

The Rebbe introduced the 12 Pesukim in two stages.

The First Six — Foundations

The first six Pesukim were given on Rosh Chodesh Iyar 5736, at the launch of a global revolution: Shnas HaChinuch.

The Rebbe was not just speaking to educators.
He was speaking to every Jew — even the smallest child.

These Pesukim built the foundation:
• Torah is your inheritance
• Hashem is One
• Yiddishkeit is real and relevant
• You matter to Hashem
• Torah is close to you
• Hashem stands with you

This is identity.
This is belonging.
This is the inner voice of a child who knows:
“I am a Jew. I have something real. I am not alone.”

And even more:
When children say these Pesukim, they don’t just grow — they protect the world.

The Second Six — The Inner Journey

Then came Lag BaOmer.
A parade. Children. Joy.

And suddenly — a turning point.
The Rebbe added six more Pesukim.
Not just teachings.
A step-by-step inner guide for life.
A map of the human soul.

The Journey the Rebbe Maps Out

A person looks at the world and feels overwhelmed.

Step 1 — Fear
The world is chaotic. I’m scared.
The Rebbe answers:
Bereishis Bara Elokim.
This is not chaos. This is the world created by the G-d of kindness.
He put you here with a purpose and mission. There is no reason to fear.

Step 2 — Confusion
So what do I do?
The Rebbe answers:
Learn Torah. Teach it. Live it — day and night.
It brings clarity. Direction. Structure.

Step 3 — Self-Doubt
I tried. I failed. I’m not capable.
The Rebbe answers:
Yagati u’matzasi — if you truly try, you will succeed.
Failure is not proof of inability — only of incomplete effort.

Step 4 — Isolation
I’m alone. I don’t matter.
The Rebbe answers:
Love another as yourself.
But first — recognize your own value. Love yourself.
You matter.
And because you matter, so does every other Jew.

Step 5 — Meaninglessness
In a world of billions… who am I?
The Rebbe answers:
You are the purpose of creation.
The entire world exists so you can make it a home for Hashem.
Without you, it cannot be completed.

Step 6 — Emptiness
I just want to feel happy… even for a moment.
The Rebbe answers:
Rejoice in G-d’s joy.
When you live your mission, you will be truly happy, you will tap into something deeper than fleeting happiness:
You will live G-d’s eternal joy. A life of ongoing, inner joy.

Two Halves — One Masterpiece

Now we understand.

The first six Pesukim build a Jew.
The second six build a human being who can live, grow, and thrive in the real world.

Together, they form a complete system:
• Identity
• Direction
• Resilience
• Purpose
• Joy

Not theory.
A prescription.

Why Was the Sicha Hidden?

And now, the question that shakes everything:

Why was that Sicha — the one explaining the second six Pesukim — hidden for 38 years?

Why written… edited… and then disappear?

And why return at a moment of confusion, pain, and searching?

The answer is simple — and powerful:

Because this was not information.
This was medicine.

And medicine is given when it is needed most.

Fifty Years Later

Fifty years have passed.

Children still sing these Pesukim.

But now we know:
They were never just for children.
They were for:
• the confused
• the struggling
• the searching
• the broken
• the hopeful
They were for all of us.

The Closing Truth

The Rebbe did not leave us without direction.

He gave us something extraordinary:

A system so simple a child can sing it —
and so deep it can rebuild a life.

The 12 Pesukim are not just what we teach our children.
They are what we must remind ourselves.

And when we live with them — truly live with them —

we don’t just survive.

We become whole.

We live a Happy Life Given to Us By Hashem!
