Cause Of Friday Bomb Scare At Chabad UC Santa Barbara Revealed

When your box of cutlery starts beeping, don’t worry it’s not a bomb.

A Friday bomb scare which caused the evacuation of Chabad UC Santa Barbara has had it’s cause revealed, a kitchen timer in a box of cutlery.

“If you got cutlery from Shluchim supplies don’t worry if the box starts beeping,” a message sent out said. “We got worried when the box outside our house started beeping. And the police evacuated the alley an hour before our first shabbos and a bomb squad came to check it out. Turns out they included a gift of a kitchen timer.”

As previously reported on Crownheights.info, at approximately 5:00pm Friday afternoon, Sheriff’s Deputies received a report of a suspicious package at Chabad UC Santa Barbara. The bomb squad was called and the building evacuated.

After nearly three hours the package was deemed to be harmless and the building reopened.

Chabad UC Santa Barbara put out a message on social media as the incident was being investigated, informing the students that “In an abundance of caution, the local police have evacuated and blocked off the alleyway leading to Chabad to check a suspicious package, so we are pushing off Shabbat dinner to 8:30.The police are saying we may be in the all clear by then. Bh everyone is safe! Shabbat shalom!”
