First-Ever Hudson Encounter to Bring Jewish Young Professionals to Albany for Shabbaton of Meaning and Connection

by Yossi Weinstein

Young Jewish professionals from across the U.S. and Canada are gearing up for the first-ever CYP Hudson Encounter. Set against the picturesque backdrop of Albany, New York, this three-day experience promises young Jewish professionals from across the country a weekend to connect, recharge, and grow, at a time when its needed most.

Set for August 22–24 (28–30 Av), the weekend will bring together young professionals for a Shabbaton that blends nature, learning, and community. Set against Albany’s historic architecture and scenic Hudson River views, it promises to be the perfect setting for something deeper: a space for young Jews to think, connect, and take real steps in their Jewish lives.

“The Rebbe taught us the importance of these immersive Jewish experiences. When Jews gather with purpose, the impact lasts,” said Rabbi Mendy Kotlarsky, Executive Director of Merkos 302.“At a time when young Jews are seeking clarity and connection, we hope the inspiration from this weekend will go home with each person, strengthening Jewish life wherever they are.”

The weekend kicks off Friday with a guided hike at Thacher State Park. As the sun sets, Shabbos will begin with uplifting prayers, a meaningful dinner, and an open-floor farbrengen plus choose-your-track learning and raw discussions. On Shabbos day, guests will explore Albany’s Capital District and enjoy a live mentalist show. Sunday closes out the experience with a private Hudson River cruise.

“These weekends matter, not just to me, but to so many others,” said Jacob Gruber, a member of Chabad Young Professionals Upper East Side, one of the chapters participating in the Encounter weekend. “For some, it’s their first time experiencing Shabbat in a traditional setting. For others, it’s a powerful way to reconnect with their Jewish values and identity. After attending the CYP Shavuot retreat upstate, I felt the young professionals community needs more of these trips and Shabbatons: spaces where every Jew feels welcome and inspired.”

The Encounter is part of the rapidly growing series of regional CYP Shabbatons organized by Rabbi Nissi Lepkivker, director of CYP’s Encounter initiative. While flagship events like CYP Encounter Crown Heights have a global audience, regional meetups like the Hudson Experience focus on more local community building, allowing people to have the opportunity to maintain their friendships even once the Shabbaton is finished.

“Young professionals today are looking for genuine connection and real meaning,” said Rabbi Beryl Frankel, Director of CYP International at Merkos 302. “This weekend gives them both a space to build lasting relationships while engaging with their Judaism in ways that are relevant and deeply fulfilling.”

This uplifting weekend experience will take place in Albany, NY, from August 22 to 24 (28 to 30 Av).
