BDE: Rabbi Sholom Ber Lipskar, 79, OBM

With great sadness we report the passing of Rabbi Sholom Ber Lipskar OBM, the renowned Shliach of Bal Harbor, Florida and founder of The Shul. He passed away on Shabbos morning, the 5th of Iyar, 5785.

He was 79 years old.

Born in Tashkent, Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic in 1946, Rabbi Lipskar was smuggled as a baby through the Soviet border to a Displaced person (DP) camp in Germany. Arriving in North America in the early 1950s, Rabbi Lipskar’s family settled in Ontario, Canada.

He was ordained as a Rabbi from the Lubavitch Yeshiva in Brooklyn in 1968, and in 1969, Lipskier was hired as the principal of the Landow Yeshiva School in Miami Beach, Florida. He served as principal of its elementary school for a number of years.

In 1982 Rabbi Lipskar founded The Shul of Bal Harbour in Surfside, Florida and has since led the congregation as its head Rabbi.

For Rabbi Lispkier, a lot is not enough, and he also founded the Aleph Institute, a non-profit national humanitarian organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for both prisoners and military personnel and their families.

He is survived by his wife Chani and children; Zalman Lipskar (Miami, FL) and Devorah Leah Andrusier.

He is also survived by his siblings; Rabbi Mendel Lipskier, Mrs. Batsheva Schochet, and Rabbi Yossi Lipskier

The Levaya will take place Sunday, stopping at The Shul in Bal Harbor at 9:00am before continuing to NYC. The Levaya will pass by 770 Eastern Parkway at approximately 2:30pm. Kevurah will take place at the Old Montefiore Cemetery near the Ohel at 3:30pm.

    So sorry to hear about the passing of Rabbi Lipskar. He was such an inspiring public speaker. 5 Iyar is also the yartzeit of Rabbi Lipskar’s late uncle, the Rebbe’s Shliach to Morocco, Rabbi Michoel Lipsker o.b.m. who passed away 40 years ago.

    So sorry to hear of Rabbi Lipskar’s passing. He was always there for my husband’s family. He did my daughter’s baby naming in the first little house in Surfside used as the Shul before the magnificent Shul of Bal Harbour was built. He will be missed and remembered for all he did. BDE

    I have such hakaras hatov, appreciation, for the Rabbi and his Rebbetzin, l’havdil l’chayim tovim v’aruchim. They flipped my old neighborhood where I lived with my family to a young, vibrant, frum community for future generations. Tehiye Zichro Baruch. May his memory be blessed.
