Building Libraries 63 Books at a Time

Students get sponsors and raise money for reading books. Every penny of the money they raise goes to the school for expanding the library.

Over the past two years the school raised nearly $2500. While they have a monetary goal for this year, their real goal, according to School Rabbi Eli Broner, is to expand the lending library so all the students can have books out at the same time.

That’s an ambitious goal, but the students are up to the challenge. Last year, one third grade student was able to read 63 books. While that was an extraordinary achievement, the other students also are eager to get involved. According to Rabbi Broner, the students like to read, they like to earn money for the school and are encouraged when they get to see where their tzedaka dollars are going. With students like that, the bigger challenge the school may face is where to put all the books their students earn.

This year’s program runs from November 4 – 25. For information on how you can participate by sponsoring one of the students, or by bringing the Book-a-thon to your school, contact Mrs. Chaya Franklin at Kehot Publication Society at (718)778-0226.
