SPRINGFIELD, IL — Illinois’ state House of Representatives voted Thursday to override Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s veto of a moment-of-silence bill, effectively making law provisions for all public schools in the state to begin their days with a moment of silence.

Joining those in favor of the bill’s passage were some 30 Chabad-Lubavitch rabbis who cater to Jewish communities in the Midwestern state. The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of righteous memory, advocated for instituting times during a public school day for students to reflect on something higher than themselves.

“We’re very happy,” said Rabbi Daniel Moscowitz, director of Lubavitch Chabad of Illinois. “This is something that Rebbe spoke so strongly about, so we had each one of our emissaries contact their representatives to hear the Rebbe’s view on the bill.”

In just one of the many speeches the Rebbe made on the subject, he said in 1984 that the only solution to a dearth of morality in a society wholly depended on public school education is to begin a school day with a moment of silence.

Don’t be so happy. How many in CH or anywhere have children in the public school system? We don’t need the state’s permission to pray anytime or anywhere.
You don’t want the state to get involved in your religion do you? This is step one, beleive me. Next, as when I was a boy and went to public school, the state will be telling you what to pray. We need the seperation of church and state to protect us from what many in this country would like to see happen, making christianity the official and dominant religion.
This is a victory for Christians only
    don’t kid yourselves.
