Reestablishment of Railroad Service Will Bring The Lubavitch Community of Kingston, PA Closer to NYC

by CrownHeights.info

The growing Lubavitch community of Kingston, PA has until now had to endure a grueling two and a half hour drive to and from NYC up until now. Soon that will change.

U.S. Senator Bob Casey and U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright announced that the Federal Railroad Administration is working to reestablish Amtrak rail service between Scranton, a station less than 30 minutes from Kingston, and New York City.

“I have fought to restore Scranton rail service for my entire career as a United States Senator, including voting to pass the infrastructure law, because bringing passenger rail service back to my hometown and to our region will be a game-changing force for our economy, our families, and our communities,” Senator Casey was quoted by Pix11 as saying.

Rail service previously ran between Scranton and New York, but was discontinued in 1970 due to inconsistent use and upkeep.

This upgrade will significantly increase Kingston, PA’s allure for young, and not so young Lubavitchers looking to live in a more affordable area while remaining within easy transportation to NYC. For those working in Manhattan, or those wanting to visit the Shchnua, Kingston, PA just became an even more enticing option.

    Lets review:

Not including the subway trip to Penn, it is a 3+ hour train ride.

Followed by a 6 hour walk for you & your family to Kingston from Scranton.

Or rent a car from Scranton & drive another 30 minutes to Kingston. However, that begs the question:

Why did you bother taking the train instead of driving directly to Kingston in the first place?

Drive time from CH to Kington = 3 hours

Easiest way to rehabilitate the rail line would be to electrify the Kingston-Scranton corridor. Faster acceleration and de-acceleration. Easier on the existing rails and therefore wouldn’t need an update to the rails. Next step would be to electrify rails from Scranton to NYC. Just get Buttageieg involved

Service wouldnt begin before 2028, close to 3hr train ride, and would still need to get to scranton . And if going to shchuna, a subway to crown heights. This wont make any difference

  • The Real Story

    1. According to Amtrak, the service would not begin before 2028 at the earliest. The project still must secure the estimated $100 million to $175 million.

    2. The “grueling two and a half hour drive to and from NYC” will not be 3 hours and 30 minutes by train, not to mention the drive to the station both ways.
