CHK Posts Kashrus Alert Regarding Matzos From the Lubavitch Matzah Bakery In Crown Heights

by CrownHeights.info

The Vaad Hakashrus of Crown Heights, which oversees the CHK Kashrus Organization has published an alert notifying that the Lubavitch Matzah Bakery in Crown Heights is presently not under their supervision.

“While we work to resolve these issues promptly, please be advised that this applies to all matza produced so far this year,” the alert says. “Please take note that any matza packaged without the CHK symbol is not under our Hechsher.”

The Lubavitch Matzah Bakery, located on Albany Ave in Crown Heights, has been one of the major sources of Matzah for the Lubavitch community worldwide for years, with the Rebbe himself using the Matzah Bakery each Pesach.

According to reports from people involved, the issue stems from requests made by the Vaad Hakashrus in an effort to make improvements to the Bakery. Requests being made, according to the source, include technical and layout improvements as well as a requirement that all workers be Shomer Shabbos.

No official statements have yet been made from either side regarding the reasons behind the issue and CrownHeights.info will update as information becomes available.

Rolling matzos is hard physical labor and low pay. It’s usually Russian immigrants who accept the job. Are there 20 shomer shabbos Jews near Crown Heights who’d take the job instead?

    Doubtful!

According to halacha, in order for the matzos to be לשם מצות מצוה, a yid should be the one rolling the matzos.

Many Russian immigrants unfortunately not halachic Jews due to intermarriage. Also, for a job, some real Russian/Ukrainian goyim will claim to be Jewish. By insisting on shomer shabbos, you eliminate the non-Jewish workers.

But this issue was going on long before Gimmel Tamuz, and the Rebbe STILL used their matzoh.

Have we become frummer than the Rebbe?!

    • to "chossid"

the Rebbes matzos where made by 770 bochurim, and after kashering the whole bakery

The fact is. For the past few years, Harav Broin gives a hechsher in a bakery in Williamsburg. The Tov & others stopped eating CH matzahs long ago.
BTW, the Williamsburg matzahs tastes better. Not sure what they put into it.

No the buchrim did NOT roll the matzes for the Rebbe. It was the same Russian woman. Ask anyone that was there.

That is exactly why Tennenbaum doesn’t feel that he needs to change anything…..
He says, if it was okay then, it should be okay now.
