Rabbi Braun: “Act This Shabbos The Way You Act Avery Shabbos”

by CrownHeights.info

In a stinging rebuke disseminated across social media, Rabbi’s Yosef Braun and Rabbi Avraham Osdoba of the Crown Heights Bais Din made it clear that people should be vigilant, but should act this Shabbos as they act every Shabbos.

The sharp message came after Zaki Tamir, a lawyer and community member elected to lead the Vaad Hakohol over eight years ago, published a video message quoting Rabbi Osdoba as giving a heter that residents of Crown Heights could carry weapons on Shabbos, including mace or anything needed to protect themselves.

The video message was spread widely on social media, and the Rabbonim’s response was swift.

Quoting the police and public officials, Rabbi Braun doubled down that there are no credible threats to Crown Heights at this time, and absolutely no reason for fear or panic. Having made that clear, Braun reminds the community that there exists no community accepted Eruv in Crown Heights and carrying on Shabbos is forbidden.

Ending his message, Rabbi Braun forcefully makes it clear that no person is authorized to make any claims in the name of the Bais Din, and that there is no heter to carry weapons this shabbos, even with a Shinoi.

Following the release of the response from the Bais Din, Tamir again took to social media saying that the Rabbonim had done a “threat analysis” and had come to the conclusion that no threat exists and rescinded their heter.

These rabbis had special intelligence that they knew for a fact that people were safe? These are crazy times and people should carry guns to protect themselves and others in g-d forbid if a situation were to happen in a synagogue. People carry on Shabbos in Israel and during these dangerous times should be able to carry here.

As a matter of fact, yes. Rabbonim do have “special intelligence,” otherwise known as siyata d’Shmaya.

Meaning what, exactly? Shabbos is over, and indeed as the Rabbonim said, there was no danger, BH.
