Old Crown Heights Hospital To be Resurrected, Become COVID-19 Facility

by CrownHeights.info

The old St Mary’s Hospital on Buffalo Ave in Crown Heights has been shuttered since 2005, and is now being resurrected as a COVID-19 facility.

The Roman Catholic Hospital had originally been built in 1979, and remained open until the bankruptcy of the hospital chain in 2005.

The hospital had since been bought and leased to Centers Health care, a Jewish owned nursing home company with nursing homes across the state. The site had recently been renovated for a state of the art nursing facility, and was waiting on permits to begin use.

As the COVID-19 pandemic struck New York City, and hospitals scrambled to find alternative sites, this location became a key factor in managing the thousands of expected cases.

Although rumors of its opening have been circulating for some time, the facility is finally scheduled to begin taking patients this week.

The large building is rumored to hold between 250 and 400 beds, although this is likely to change due to need for space.

The COVID-19 pandemic has already taken over a thousand lives in New York City alone, clogging hospitals with critical patients.

The virus is not expected to peak for a few weeks yet, bringing the worry of a shortage of beds and ventilators.
