by CrownHeights.info

Phone scammers are continuing to target Crown Heights residents, using threats and gruesome images to scare their victims.

CrownHeights.info has learned of at least two such instances where scammers contacted Crown Heights residents, first attempting to trick them, then threatening them into handing over money.

The scams are not new, having been reported internationally for years, but they have just recently began targeting Crown Heights residents more frequently.

The scammers initial attempts included sophisticated methods into tricking their victims, including using the victims own personal information, and spoofing caller ID to appear like law enforcement or a relatives phone number. When that failed, they then used gruesome and graphic images to scare their victims. Going so far as to threaten their families lives.

Crown Heights Shomrim, which has dealt with multiple recent incidents, warns the community to NEVER send an unknown individual money by wire of electronically.

It is incredibly easy in this day and age for a person to gather your personal information, including name, address and even date of birth. DO NOT LET A PHONE SCAMMER FOOL YOU! If you are unsure if a call is a scam, call Crown Heights Shomrim at 718-774-3333 and 911 for guidance.
