Girl in Near-Fatal Drowning Has Miraculous Recovery

After over a week of heartfelt prayers on her behalf from the global Jewish community, young Sophie Levitin has made a full and complete recovery.

“Sophie has been evaluated by OT and PT and is doing great! She was able to get up and walk around a bit. She has some strength to gain back, but we are all amazed with how strong she has been!” her elated mother Deb Levitin wrote on Facebook. “The discharge orders have been put in and we should be going home to NY in just about no time.”

Sophie was discovered by her mother last Sunday, June 25th, unconscious in a swimming pool where they were summer vacationing. Paramedics and doctors initially offered little hope for a full recovery, but that didn’t stop thousands of Jews of all stripes and all walks of life from praying on her behalf.

“I would like to stress again how amazing everyone has been. All our family and friends, and those we don’t even know, all over the world. Of all hospitals to have been in, Vanderbilt Children’s couldn’t have been any better. The staff makes you feel like family and truly cares about Sophie! The Chabad of Nashville has made sure to take care of all our kosher needs and much more! Thank you again and I can’t wait to update with video/pictures of Sophie running around back at home in NY. She has made a miraculous recovery and will soon have a COMPLETE and full recovery!” her mother wrote.

  • So happy to read good news!

It seems like every day we read about tragedies affecting our community; it is wonderful to hear about Sophie’s miracle.

But… please keep telling your children not wander off and keep an eye on them especially near pools, ponds and rivers. Water in any form is a magnet for children.

Have a safe & healthy summer.
