South African Teens’ Arrival in New York Makes History

For young Jewish teens in South Africa, history was made today as the first members of CTeen-Cape Town landed at NYC’s JFK airport, completing the maiden voyage to the international CTeen Shabbaton.

The visit capped six months of activity since the first discussions of establishing a fully functioning Chabad Teen Network chapter in Cape Town, which began close to a year ago.

Under the leadership of Rabbi Mendel and Rebbetzin Avi Popack, Chabad of Cape Town has been in an upward spiral of growth and activity, capped this year by the 40th anniversary since being sent by the Rebbe to establish Chabad of Cape Town in June of 1976.

With the incredible support of the CTeen International office and Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky, CTeen Cape Town was launched by Chabad House in the second half of 2015, with numerous teen activities and a massive sign-up drive to which dozens of young Jewish teenagers have already responded.

The official launch of CTeen was held at the Herzlia Schools, with 250 young Jewish students in attendance.  Rebbetzin Debbie Suiza and Mr. Shimon Moch, heads of Jewish studies in the middle school, were asked to choose the raffle of the winners as the excitement of CTeen Cape Town became a real and vibrant reality.

Rabbi Levi Popack, program director at Chabad House – with Bochurim Shluchim Mendel Weinstein and Menachem Elgarten, together with Rabbi Pini Hecht, associate rabbi at the Marais Road Shul and Herzlia Beth Midrash, coordinated the sign-up drive, launch event and are working on an exciting program for the year ahead.
