Vaad Rabbonei Lubavitch: Metzitza B’peh Is Mandatory

The Central Vaad Rabbonei Lubavitch has released the following letter [Hebrew], encouraging Mohelim to continue with the practice of Metzitza B’peh as it has been traditionally performed for centuries, without paying attention to those who are trying to put an end to it.

The letter is signed by Rabbi Moshe Bogomilsky, Rabbi B.A.Z. Winner, and Rabbi Dovid Schochet.

There’s a typo in the 4th paragraph, instead of סריליזצי’ה it should be סטריליזצי
English equivalent: “Sterilization” instead of “Serilization”

• who cares

is the bris not a bris if it was not done?

is a bris not a bris if it was done via a tube?

Unfortunately, that is not the only typo.
The next paragraph has another two typos. So sad no one can be bothered to read the basic Hebrew to see if it needs corrections, especially if it is a communication from an esteemed gathering.

#2, Yes, if metzitza was omitted, the bris is kosher and does not have to be redone. That should be obvious; what exactly would you redo? Now explain why you think that’s relevant.

#6, What do you want explained? Metzitzah is part of the mitzvah. It’s how Hashem told us to do it, and it’s how we’ve been doing it for 3730 years.

• I-m no big lamdan, but

Did they really call him Avraham Avinu Olav Hasholom? That sounds absurd, and too frum by half. I’ve never heard that before. Do these people know that the ‘Gedoylei Haroyfe’ now say not to even suck blood out from a venomous snakebite? And of course, there are much better anti-bacterial salves at the pharmacy than human saliva. No wonder people want to ban the internet. They’re writing to a crowd that can’t look into things for themselves. Sorry. No MBP for my kids.

I would like to relate a story that happened around 30 years ago.
As many people know my mother Rebbetzin Cheyena Avtzon arranged brissen for Jews from the Soviet Union who were in Detroit Michigan.
In order to make them more comfortable it was arranged with Mount Sinai Hospital, that one of the operating rooms would be made available once a week for two brissen.
one week the administration informed the mohel Rabbi Sholom G. that some of them will be present to witness it and they will use this for PR purposes.
Realizing that he was under scrutiny, the mohel decided this one time he will use a tube for the metziza,in order thatno issues arise.
As my mothers custom was, immediately after the bris was preformed, she called up mazkirus to inform the Rebbe. A few minutes later, she was called back to the nurses station. they informed her that shehasa long distance phone call.
Taking the phone, it wasa call from Rabbi Chodakov. He said, The Rebbe instructed me to find out if the mohel did the metztza b’peh or if he used a tube.
My mother replied she is never in the room during the bris, so she would have to ask the mohel and will call back asap.
The mohel replied this was the first time he used a tube and explained to my mother why.
He then said when you informed the Rebbe all the previous times, the Rebbe never asked how it was done, only this time he did, evidently it is wrong even under difficult situations. this was the first and will be my last time using a tube.

#8, Milhouse. 3730 years? Really? Did Tziporah do metzitza ba’peh? I’ll have to check Rashi there.

• Frum Doctor

Everyone should protect their precious babies and the mohel- Fathers do your first act of selflessness for your baby and do your own Metzitza B’Peh. Keep everyone’s diseases in your own family. Only a small thing to do for our children.

While we must be careful because the bris is under assault , metzizah b’beh is not an essentail part of the bris nor I understand is metzizah itself even part of the mitzvah.
