Legendary Baalas Chesed’s Matzeiva Unveiled

The matzeiva unveiling for Mrs. Miriam Slater, OBM, a longtime member of the Crown Heights community and beloved Baalas Chesed, who passed away last week at the age of 60, took place yesterday, Tuesday.

The Niftar’s family and several members of Anash were in attendance at the dedication, which took place at her burial site in the Montefiore Cemetery in Queens, in proximity to the Rebbe’s Ohel.

The Mazeiva bears testament that Miriam was loved and respected by many in the community for her quiet acts of goodness and kindness. She was known to live by the famous saying of the Tzemach Tzedek – “tracht gut vet zain gut” (think good and it will be good).

The Crown Heights community will have a chance to show their appreciation for all her good deeds at a Shloshim gathering, to be held iy”h on Wednesday, November 26, 2014.

The Slater family lived on Lefferts Ave for many years- when it was considered the West Bank of Crown Heights. I grew up on Lefferts and continue to visit my parents regularly. That’s how I got lucky enough to know Mrs. Slater– and to know her was to admire and respect her.
In her presence you felt real simchas Hachayim fueled by a strong sense of purpose. It left you invigorated and wondering if perhaps you shouldn’t smile more, do more, feel more..
I live in Binghamton, NY and since the Slaters moved from “our block” I saw Mrs. Slater only infrequently. And still, I will miss her. Without me — or her– knowing it, she was an important beacon of light in my life and in the lives, I would venture, of many.
May she be a gutte better for her beloved family and all of klal yisroel.

The description of her is so true What a special and sincere and unassuming woman who possessed many qualities we can all learn from.

Even with everything written on her matzeiva, it’s just the tip of the iceberg of Miriam’s accomplishments.

If you had the privilege of knowing Miriam, let her legacy live on through your actions.

If you were touched by her simchas hachayim, smile and say hello or good shabbos to the people you pass on the street.
If her Ahavas Yisroel and amazing acts of chesed are what touched you, you can increase in acts of kindness, visit a sick friend, cook a meal for an elderly neighbor.
Take pictures at your friends’ simchas and present them with a CD, volunteer at fund raisers, listen with empathy to someone going through a rough time. Bake cookies with your children or grandchildren. Jot down some of your memories and share them with her family.

There are so many things Miriam did for her family, friends and neighbors. If each person she touched just does one thing extra in Miriam’s zechus, just think what a wonderful change we can effect.
    Tracht gut vet zein gut.
