Chief Rabbi Intercedes with Putin, Exams Rescheduled

Across Russia, high school students are scheduled to take their government-mandated final exams on the 4th of June. However, while inconspicuous to the average Russian student, this scheduling arrangement created a problem for the thousands of Jewish children enrolled in Or Avner day schools around the country, as this date coincides with the holiday of Shavuos.

After many sleepless nights mulling the problem, Rabbi Berel Lazar, chief rabbi of Russia, requested an audience with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The request was granted.

At their subsequent meeting, the Russian leader heard the rabbi’s plight and assured him that the problem would be taken care of.

Shortly after the meeting, Rabbi Lazar received a letter from the Ministry of Education, apologizing for the inconvenient of the current scheduling and offering an alternative date – later in June – for all Jewish students in the county to take the exams.

The relieved rabbi informed the network of Jewish schools across the country that their students will indeed be able to keep the holiday of Shavuos without worry.

It is great that this worked out. Kudos to Rabbi Lazar. Nevertheless, isn’t it sad that it requires intervention with this occasionally benevolent dictator to getting something like this corrected? Does HE need to control even the exam dates of high school students? Hashem Yerachaym.
