Internet? There’s no such thing

Ofri Ilani – Haaretz

At the world center of Chabad Hasidism in Brooklyn, New York, the afternoon service is about to begin. Like many other events held at ultra-Orthodox venues these days, someone there photographed the worshipers with his cellular telephone’s video camera.

As is customary, at the center, dozens of Hasidim crowded against the sides of the hall, making a path for the Lubavitcher Rebbe to pass. The members of this messianic group have been doing this for years, in the belief that their late rabbi continues to attend the prayer services, as he did before his death. Suddenly, the screen on the man’s cell phone shows a stooped, elderly figure with a white beard and a hat, walking quickly between the Hasidim.

“The Chabad rabbi walks among the people as if alive,” states the film’s title (snipurl.com/15fpn ), and the Chabad portal (www.chabad.fm ) declares that the Rebbe began revealing himself on the 25th of the Hebrew month of Heshvan (November 16, 2006).

“After 12 long years in which our detractors ridiculed us, here is the clearest proof that our teacher is alive,” wrote one surfer.Other participants in the ultra-Orthodox forums throughout the Web were more skeptical, referring to the incident as one more indication of the “false messianism” of some Chabad Hasidim.

During the week following the distribution of the video clip, however, something happened that shed light on the previous week’s event. It turned out the elderly man captured by the camera is one of Chabad’s activists in Israel, who wanted to leave the hall and used the path. Still, even after the logical explanation, some people persisted in their belief.

“I still contend it is the Rebbe,” wrote one participant in “B’Hadrei Haredim” (in the Haredi inner sanctum) in the Hebrew portal “Hyde Park,” the most popular Internet forum among the ultra-Orthodox. “It is simply impossible that everyone is clearly visible and only this image, which resembles the Rebbe, looks like a glowing soul.”

Rabbinical paparazzi

The “revelation” that occurred in Brooklyn may be an extraordinary event, but it exemplifies a wider phenomenon spreading throughout the ultra-Orthodox world in recent months: paparazzi clips of rabbis, filmed by their followers, who sneak sophisticated cell phones into conferences. The film clips are uploaded onto “Haredi YouTube” sites, the most popular of which is Mashtap ( www.tsofar.com/xofar/mashtap), which defines itself as “the first ultra-Orthodox film-sharing site.” Film clips of Admor Hasidic leaders are the most popular category at Mashtap, which is part of the ultra-Orthodox news portal Tsofar.

Among the most viewed clips are “Engagement at Belz,” “Rabbi, Pinhas Weber in the Mitzvah Dance,” “The Satmar Rebbe Dancing with his Eldest Son,” and even “The Funeral of the Saintly Admor of Rachmastrivka.” The site’s operators told Haaretz that since this category opened, there has been real competition between the various Hasidic courts, with each group uploading events and waiting for viewer feedback.

The Tsofar portal offers the impression that the ultra-Orthodox sector has enthusiastically adopted the Internet. Such an impression, however, is misleading. Formally, since 2000, use of the Internet is strictly forbidden in ultra-Orthodox society, and is described by the Council of Torah Sages as a “terrible threat” and “the greatest temptation in the world,” and which is to be avoided by adherents to the Torah. It is no wonder that the activities of the Mashtap portal are veiled in secrecy, and its operators are hesitant to be interviewed.

“The Internet is strictly forbidden in the Haredi sector,” says ultra-Orthodox journalist Bezalel Kahan. “It is not recognized at all, and will probably not be in the foreseeable future. The rabbis object to the Internet and speak out against it, always mentioning it as a sick evil.” Even so, anyone familiar with the media habits of the ultra-Orthodox tell you that tens of thousands – up to 30 percent – of ultra-Orthodox access the Internet regularly, despite the prohibition, and actively surf forums, news sites and other sites.

Sometimes access is gained via Internet cafes at the edges of the ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods or at secular workplaces. Other ultra-Orthodox clandestinely install Internet access in their own homes. Unlike television, this is easy to conceal, as owning a computer is permitted by some rabbis.

To bridge the gap between the ideal and reality, there are occasional initiatives offering different types of hookups that afford access to useful services provided by the Internet without any risk of exposure to content considered an abomination and without the accompanying guilt.

No risk of exposure

Just last week Bezeq announced the launching of a special Internet infrastructure under rabbinical supervision. This infrastructure will facilitate Internet access via screened servers, but even this has been deemed unacceptable by the strictest ultra-Orthodox rabbis. In fact, over a year ago a few similarly screened Internet services began operating. One of the leading portals is Nativ ( www.enativ.com), which provides users with software blocking everything but e-mail, or allows access to a limited number of sites, such as those operated by banks, health maintenance organizations and public transportation services.

Nativ is approved by several rabbis, including Rabbi Moshe Sternbuch, vice president of the ultra-Orthodox council in Jerusalem, and Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Ullman of Bnei Brak. The rabbinical approval displayed at the site states that “an Internet device” is permissible in an office, and “only on the strict condition that software is installed that guards against the risks to body and soul, Heaven forfend.”

Nettonet.co.il is a portal that offers a similar service, and includes links to essential sites and film clips of rabbinic leaders. Babakama.co.il is a site that offers “kosher” googling and access to the strictly kosher shopstar.co.il e-commerce site, which does not operate on Shabbat.

Ultra-Orthodox media sources report that the only arrangement that has been awarded the approval of most of the rabbis is netto mail, by Bezeq International, which provides e-mail service only, with no access to Internet content.

Participants in the ultra-Orthodox forums frequently discuss the “kosher” aspects of the Internet and constantly explain and justify their Web surfing to themselves and their surroundings. They exchange creative ways of saying they saw something on the Internet, without admitting actively surfing. “Somebody else told me,” “I overheard a conversation on a bus,” and “I heard it on an emergency medical services pager,” are a few examples. One ultra-Orthodox member of the media, who preferred to remain anonymous, explains the origin of such sophisticated tactics:

“The ultra-Orthodox are apprehensive in such matters, as they could have dire consequences. If it becomes known that someone surfs the Internet, the next day his son could be expelled from [private] school.”

Despite the constant fear, the ultra-Orthodox journalist believes the Internet has gained such popularity in the ultra-Orthodox sector that the struggle against it has no chance of success, that the rabbis’ harsh opposition to the Internet only heightens the curiosity about this medium.

Quote: “The elderly man captured by the camera is one of Chabad’s activists in Israel, WHO WANTED TO LEAVE THE HALL and used the path.”

If he was trying to leave, why is he walking towards the Aron Kodesh???
He was Going IN, Not out!

In the future, please visit 770 before writing such articles which are not in sync with REALITY!

I sure hope that the next time you visit 770 you will not walk into the Aron Kodesh in attempt to exit…

What rubbish! Not such a thing. I live in Beitar Illit and I can tell you tons of people have internet, use it and talk about it freely. I’ve never, ever heard of anyone having feelings of guilt or shame about using the internet, all my neighbors and friends know that we have internet. Ofcourse the rabbis worry that people use their computers in a way that doesn’t harm them or their children and of course everyone is against young people surfing unspervised but this article brings things totally out of proportion. Our city has a website http://www.beitarcity.com and we have a yahoo mail list plus other things.
    This is truyly garbage journalism

  • CHT

if this was not the Rebbe, it was someone who tried to find good spot for davening, not leave – look, the Siddur is open. Therefore I cannot believe in the authenticity of the report that this was some activist who tried to exit. Also, exit is the other way.

  • common sense

if that was reaaly the rebbe why are all the people (tsvatim) no t looking at him. (if you carefully when the man passes by noone is looking at him).

  • JUST A LITTLE CHOSID

FOR ARGUMENTS SAKE, LET’S SAY THAT VIDEO WAS DOCTORED (JUST AS MOSHE RABEINU WAS DOCTORED….) AND THE MAN WAS ACTUALLY TRYING TO ESCAPE THESE FRIGHTENING BOCHURIM….. BUT WHEN I, A SIMPLE NOBODY WALKS AROUND ONE DAY IN TERRIBLE ANXIETY OVER A SITUATION WITH ONE OF MY CHILDREN, AND THAT VERY EVENING I RECEIVE A CALL FROM MY SON WHO IS 13,000 MILES AWAY TELLING ME THAT HE WROTE TO THE REBBE REGARDING HIS OWN CHABAD HOUSE AND WHEN HE LOOKED IN THE IGROS FOR AN ANSWER FROM THE REBBE, THE REBBE RESPONDED TO HIS QUESTIONS AND CONCLUDED THE LETTER BY REQUESTING OF MY SON “TO PLEASE GIVE HIS MOTHER THE REBBE’S PERSONAL REGARDS AND HIS BLESSING THAT SHE WILL HAVE MUCH YIDDISHE CHASSIDISHE NACHAS FROM ALL HER CHILDREN? MY SON HAD NO INKLING WHAT HE WAS EVEN TELLING ME, AS HE WAS TOTALLY UNAWARE OF MY WORRY. I DON’T NEED ANY VIDEO TO PROVE TO ME THAT THE REBBE IS HERE GUIDING US AS EVER BEFORE. ONE WHO HAD A HISKASHRUS BEFORE STILL DOES …… MAY HASHEM ENLIGHTEN THOSE SITTING IN THE DARK.

    basically…….

i found this video and i dont understand Hebrew too well but the text is saying somehting like they sang yechi and the rebbe appeared…

    hhhhhhhhhhmmmmmmm…..

well yeh miracles and amazing wonders certainly do happen in this place but to such a degree???

and i was determined to find the video editing trick…. you know, maybe i can use it for MY videos?

after watching it for about half hour i finally FOUND IT!!!

and i decided that i would never take such a chilul person for my teacher….

if u look at eleven seconds youll notice that the guy to the left of the Rebbe is “cut in half”

and no it isnt a pole if u press play again youll notice that once it goes onto twelve seconds, this guy with the hat (if it was a pole hed be in FRONT of it) has a bit of his hat chopped off…

perhaps it was two diferent videos put together?

thats what the white “blending in” line is….

and maybe (though it cudve been a “phone camera”) its unclear so noone should notice this line….

  • ATTN fact vs. fiction

    Um Mr. Fact vs Fiction-
If you go to 770 then you’ll see the sad clear facts, which are that the Rebbe in not there B-gashmius. If he was, then why would he only reveal himself on someone’s cell phone video, why didn’t the people who were there react to seeing the Rebbe in their shvil?
And if the Rebbe is in 770 B’gashmius as these ‘messianic activists’ claim, then how can they act the way they do in front of him?
Or is it really just to help make us feel good inside, and not really anything to do with being mkushar to the Rebbe?

By the way to shedding light:

The rebbe said that about stories of the baal shemtov.. as for eliyahu hanavi.. whats writen in tanach and medrash is all true!

The me’am loaz did not have a wild imagination c’v!!!

  • HEAVEN HELP US.

WHY DON’T WE ALL EXERCISE A BIT OF PATIENCE, ANDM WAIT FOR MOSHIACH AND LET HIM TELL US IF IT WAS HIM OR NOT. IN THE MEANTIME WHY NOT PUT OUR EFFORTS TOWARDS THE THINGS THE REBBE DEMANDS OF US IN ORDER TO HASTEN THE REVELATION OF MOSHIACH. HOPEFULLY THEN WE WILL ALL BE OF THE SAME (SANE) MIND. MAY IT BE NOW!

  • I do believe V-Yaakov lo mays, However.

    “….a stooped, elderly figure”

1)In all my years of watching the Rebbe pass through a crowd, never once was he walking stooped. ALWAYS straight and regal.

2)I played and replayed the videoclip many times and while the cellphone video clip seems high quality, the only fuzz is of the “stooped, elderly figure” walking through — at a pace MUCH quicker pace than I’ve EVER seen the Rebbe walk.
sounds like some high quality photoshop editing to me.

  • request to all commenters

everyone who wants to comment, should direct their comments to the author of the article and the newspaper editor. write in a very calm, factual way, without accusations, and remember, no name calling. not about the author and not about the video makers. tell the author and editor to please check out chabad dot org and let them google “Chabad House” (the quotations are to keep the two words together, you do not want to google the word House.) you could also point out askmoses dot com. even shmais dot com is where everyone checks for job opportunities. the Shluchim office sends out regular emails. the list goes on and it disproves this article, at least in terms of Chabad. i recommend not to mention the ‘thriller’ story that the article opens with. if you can bring proof of the inaccuracy of the title of the article, let that proof give a feel that the whole article was inaccurate. no need to mention the opening story just to publicize it further and add another chapter to the ‘thriller.’ people who are not frum love this stuff! the Rebbe spoke about the Friediker Rebbe being the Nosi HaDor, but he never showed photos! but if you send such comments to HaAretz you are not going to accomplish.
your goal is to publicize the things that will bring Moshiach. let them check out how many Chabad Houses use the internet and they might open one up and read it.

  • Shmuli

For arguments sake I’ll first quote the Rebbe “mah zar’oi bachayim- aff hu bachayim” [just as his children are alive- so too he is alive] and the Rebbe continues to say that this was brought down in the Gmara in reference to this weeks parsha. This week Yakov passed away, he had a levaya, he had tahara, he was buried, but never the less the Gmara concludes “mah zar’oi bachayim- aff hu bachayim mamosh” and to paraphrase the Rebbe ‘if his followers, Agudas Chasidei Chabad are alive b’gashmius so too – HE IS ALIVE B’GASHMIUS!!

I think the above is known to all Chassidim – the question is just how to react to it, and on this Lubavitch seems split.

But this video, anyone with the right mind can tell its not the Rebbe, just because this person has a white beard and the Rebbe has a white beard doesn’t mean they are the same person. In fact if you compare this with any picture of the Rebbe, you will see that this is clearly not the Rebbe.

What is it then? A failed attempt by the tzfatim to force the world to join them. The Rebbe has never given such directives. Rather, we must teach, inspire and exemplify the Rebbe’s directives, no matter how you react to the above sicha.

May we all have the z’chus and opportunity to believe in the Rebbe, believe in the Torah – which states that he is alive, B’GASHMIUS!! And not get carried away hearing sichas, receiving Dollars or in the shvil and certainly not with watching videos on the internet.

  • Agree with What-s the point?

What was the point of this? This isn’t going to change anyone’s beleifs. Let everyone stick to their beleifs without mocking. I don’t beleive any of this, BUT WHO CARES??? Why don’t we start to leave people alone. If you think they are pathetic, keep it to yourself. Everyone else thinks you’re pathetic.
Start focusing on more on bringing Moshiach then deciding, if it’s true/lies, real/fake?

  • Cookooreekoo

This video is no big deal! afew years ago there was a picture circulating of the Rebbe next to the shtender, obviously the Rebbe continuously comes and goes in 770, why is everyone so surprised!?
The only thing I can’t understand is why now, when the Rebbe is coming to video cameras everywhere can’t Reb Yoel come see it too? The Rebbe didn’t seem to have a problem with him in front of him during practically every single farbrengen?
(The sarcasm may not be percieved but it is there)

If you want to know the true state of Lubavitch (and thus our future) you have to look not at the opening of ever new Chabad Houses, but at the “quality of mind” of the people who post in response to a story like the “Rebbe walks in 770.” Not very optomistic. As long as the Rebbe (N”E) was in 770, why didn’t he go to his place near the Mizrach wall? Isn’t that why it’s always set up, for just this occasion???

  • YS

First: I consider myself to be a chossid of the Rebbe MH“M. Period. With ABSOLUTELY no questions or s’feikas, etc. etc.

I can actually prove that this video was something that someone ”put together“, either as wishful thinking, or, even worse, to try to show how meshiachistim are a bunch of ”radical fanatics“.

Anyone can SEE that the person in the video is DEFINITELY the Rebbe! It’s as clear as day! However, if you look closely, you will notice that the Rebbe is coming into 770 from just underneath the old vieber shul – (the clock on the wall and the ”EXIT“ sign are CLEARLY visible in the video.) What is ALSO clearly visible is a fuzzy white sign that USED to hang on the wall, just to the left of the clock, WHICH WAS SUBSEQUENTLY REMOVED WHEN THEY BUILT THE PORCH, after 27 Adar Rishon Nun Bais!?

If you take a look at ANY RECENT picture in 770 you will see the north wall, just underneath the old vieber shul, and you will see the clock and exit sign, BUT NO WHITE SIGN, (which is clearly visible) in the video, apparently taken on 25 marcheshvon 5767!?)

I hope that IMMEDIATELY, WITHOUT ANY ”VIDEOS“ or any other devices, we can ALL see the Rebbe MH”M REALLY, B’GASHMIUS, walking into 770, and into the 3rd Bais Hamikdash, teikef u’miyad MAMMOSH!!!

I apologize for “BREAKING” everyone’s bubble, but, I think that it does NOT do justice to the integrity of the Rebbe MH“M to promote something that simply did not happen the way the video shows.

Chassidim darfen geihen mit’en emes! WE CANNOT AND MUST NOT CONNECT SOMETHING THAT IS EMES WITH SOMETHING THAT IS SHEKER! Something that was ”CONSTRUCTED“ to try to convince people that the Rebbe MH”M is B’GASHMIUS here, must be authentic to very core!!!

If there is ANY aspect of it not being 1000% true, it would only serve to undermine everything that we as chassidim of the Rebbe MH“M stand for.

All good intentions aside, if it turns out that it’s a fake, then EVERYTHING is dragged down with it as ”FAKE“ also.

    What does it accomplish?!

If you view the clip, you can clearly see (at the 5-6 second) mark, the large blurry white sign that once hung on the upper left of the wall, just to the left of the clock, (which is above the ”EXIT“ sign) on the old vieber shul wall. (on the northern side of 770) It is also quite visible at the 12-13 second mark as well.

If you look at some pictures of the back northern wall, RECENTLY taken in 770, you will NOT see any white signs on the left of the clock at all!

In my humble opinion, the beginning of this clip was taken on 25 MarCheshvon 5767, and the second half (or thereabouts) was taken sometime after 5748 and before 5752.

Hence, IT IS MOST CERTAINLY the Rebbe MH”M, EXCEPT, it was NOT taken now, but was taken a long time ago, and put together as one whole video.

I, for one, would love to know why anyone would submit it as a “true” video?!

  • wish it is the Rebbe

I have an open mind, and I could believe that that is the Rebbe walking through. But the Mishichistm ruined it for everone. Everything that happens we think that there is a conspiracy with them. If the Rebbe himself walked into 770, people would wonder if they the mishichists planned a look alike. Its like the boy that cried wolf. If everything about the subject of Moshiach was done in a normal tactful way, I think everyone would be more open minded to it.

  • YS

As an afterthought, I also just noticed there is a large yellow sticker that is PASTED AND STUCK ONTO the wall of the old vieber shul, and it’s still there as of today.

Why do we NOT see this in the video!?

You can CLEARLY AND PLAINLY SEE it right on the wall.

(Look at the 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 second marks on the video, and you’ll see what I am talking about.)

  • Yoseph Yitzchak

I don’t understand how there are so many crazy people in the Lubavitch community. It just boggles my mind. It’s actually not only the Lubavitch community that’s full of really truly crazy people. Look at the litvishe velt, you’ve got rebbaim in yeshivas doing terrible things and then they try to cover it up as if the guy did nothing wrong. You have another guy selling treife meat in kosher stores etc. In the other Chassidic velts you’ve got fights in bobov and satmar over who’s the real rebbe, you’ve got the neturei karta and you also have many other crazy people in the various sects.
For me, the Lubavitch community hits home the most because that’s where I grew up. Why are there so many crazy people?
Maybe our generation is like the generation of those who left mitzraim, you had people who were in the presences of Moshe Rabbeinu, G-d had just taken them out of mitzraim and all they did was complain and commit horrible sins.

  • YS

    TO: Yoseph Yitzchak:

Are you referring to the “crazy” people who “believe” in the video, or the “crazy” people who don’t?

    Correction to previous comment

One can CLEARLY see the wall of the old vieber shul EXACTLY at the 12, 13, 14, 15 & 16 second marks on the video clip.

(Not as I stated before at the 5 & 6 second mark.)

Vos darf men kleren? Take a GOOD LONG HARD LOOK at the video, you will need to pause it at EXACTLY the marks I indicated above, and then you will see what I am talking about.

Look at pictures that were taken RECENTLY at 770, which show that EXACT SPOT where we see the Rebbe MH“M walking in from, and you will see that they don’t match! *Blury hient, Blury morgen – DREI NISHT AH KOP!

(VEN DER KOP IZ AH BISSEL TZUDREIT, B’MEILA, EVERYTHING LOOKS ”BLURY“!)
