Mendy Pellin Gives Brooklyn’s Jews the Giggles

In a departure from his routine on-screen performances, renowned filmmaker, actor and comedian Mendy Pellin took to the stage in person at the Millenium Theater in Brighton Beach to dish up some Pesach laughs to the eager crowd. It was history in the making: the first ever orthodox Jewish stand-up comedy show.

The audience, a diverse crowd from Brooklyn’s many Jewish neighborhoods: Crown Heights, Borough Park, Flatbush, Williamsburg and beyond, immensely enjoyed the two hour experience, which – to their delight – went well into overtime.

The Show, dubbed the Sholom Bayis Tour, focused on the Jewish stigmas of dating and married life, which – Mendy proved – can often be hilarious.

In a backstage interview with Crownheights.info, Mendy Pellin said “I’m sorry about all the overtime. You see, Crown Heights is a goldmine of comedy material; I could have gone on for 12 hours!”

I’m overseas for Yom Tov so I couldn’t make it to the show. Is there a place where I can see the full thing?

Mendy, you were phenomenal!! Your first show, I came with no expectations, but you outdid yourself….Now, while you were enjoyable, sitting there for too long was a bit tiring, and I did have to get home to a babysitter, who expected me home earlier…but will iy”H be at your next show.

If he made his entire show available online you would never pay to go to the next one…

    Mendy great debut.
    Few tips:
[a] Start on time. That’s being professional.
[b] Music was deafening. Total turn-off.
    [c] Way too long. Overkill.

Man be fare, I payed $75.

BTW, I have no regret, spent real quality time with my wife, it was lots of fun, even though Mendy has plenty of room for improvement. Thanks Mendy, just don’t stop where you are, take it higher and higher.

    Mendy,
I was there. It was amazing. The first standup comedy ever done and you did fantastic! Thanks for the great laughs and keep them coming!

Mendy was funny but a little dragged out in parts. Even the video clip seen here – I mean it is funny but unless it’s a laugh every 10 seconds you’ve lost your audiemce. On the whole 8 out of 10 and 10 out of 10 in parts. Better than most debuts.

    Agreed.

If it would have started on time, or even a healthy 10 minutes late, and if there weren’t so many music interludes he could have had the same amount of actual comedy time and it’d be more enjoyable.

Also, the music was too loud. I saw a couple of people requesting to be seated further back because of the volume of the music.

Otherwise was very nice. Personally I had quite a few LOLs and a lot of that-was-funny-smiles.

For some reason when he was teasing the spotlight guy to follow him while he quickly moved around was one the funniest bits for me. I think a good combination of shpiel (impressions, acting a scene etc.) with stand-up would have been really good, since I think Mendy shines in being the funny guy even more then just being a narrator of joke.

But I’m half asleep (include that in the equation when reading this post)…

I saw a frum stand up comedian (sorry I forget his name) at the Renaissance Fair in Morristown in the 1980s – almost 25 years ago. The comedian, who performed in front of a large crowd in the yeshiva grounds, had performed stand-up on national TV shows.
I think Mendy is very talented and a great comedian but this was not “the first ever orthodox Jewish stand-up comedy show”.
    A Gut Moed to all

Why does every common have a BUT? you laughed? that what counts. I didnt find EVERY joke funny either, but most of them were and that was way good enough for me.

Mendy you did great and the old people that have a problem with the music too loud, just turn down the hearing aids a bit and you will be fine. This is a comedy show and loud is in, this is not a tennis match

I dont live in NY but was by the inlaws we were all there and everyone loved it

  • does this mendy guy realise

    that he is representing chabad?

i find him shallow and irresponsible. i am not suprised that so many frum people are turend off from chassidus.

while they go learn on chol hamoied, this lubavitcher makes a commedy show! and with him, the entire lubavitch community is draagged, as if we all are that empty.

Heard it was great, but way to long. General allowance: 90 minutes. Except if you are Les Mis or the Phantom. Otherwise, even Jackie Mason gets 90 minutes!Trim it around the edges, man! There will be other good times IYH to showcase all the other stuff you are trying to cram in. In my opinion, THIS is the secret of being entertaining!

  • to all complaining about the time

just leave when you get bored!

    to #14
yoily leibiwitz representing all chasidim?,is mody representing all litfishers? either way there are plenty of lubavs sitting and learning and there are plenty of “snags” at amusement parks ect.

    1. Taking kids to amazement park fulfills great mitzva of shelosh regolim.
    2. I took out my wife to this show and had my older kids babysit my younger because it is even greater mitzva to give wife some fun who work so hard before and during peisach
