Fatal Pedestrian Struck Shuts Eastern Parkway For Hours

Update 1:15pm: The deceased has been identified as Gonzalez, Walter, 56-year-old male living at 1215 Eastern Parkway.

Pursuant to an ongoing investigation, the following individual has been arrested and charged on Sunday, October 23, 2022 at 2155 hours within the confines of the 77 Precinct: Springer, Jefferson, 26-year-old male living at 309 Rockaway Parkway Brooklyn, NY.

He is being charged for; Manslaughter, Criminally Negligent Homicide, Reckless Driving, Aggravated Unlicensed Operator of a Motor Vehicle, Failure to Obey Traffic Device, and Speed Violation: Imprudent Speed.

A pickup truck driving on Eastern Parkway fatally struck a person Sunday evening, shutting down the Parkway for hours.

According to witness reports, the driver of the dark colored Chevy pickup struck the person near the intersection of Troy Ave and Eastern Parkway, and attempted to get away in his badly damaged vehicle.

It was not to be, with his car stalling out less than a block away. The driver then remained on scene for the police.

The pedestrian struck had allegedly been standing in the median lane of the Parkway, according to the police.

The police were called and an investigation began, with the Parkway being closed from Troy Ave to Utica Ave.

The services of Chesed Shel Emes were not required in this case.

Update: Police have identified the victim as a 56 year old man, and the driver as a 26 year-old man. The driver was taken into custody after hitting the man while attempting to pass another vehicle. No charges have yet been filed.

    As bad as this is, when is something going to be done about all the panhandlers that stand in the middle of Eastern Parkway waiting to ask people for money when they are at a red light? As someone who drives EP every day, there are numerous homeless/addicts/mental people who do this all along Eastern Parkway

      Sadly, they are residents of a building that is owned by a fellow Crown Heights resident who leases the building to the city as a halfway house. This is what happens when money trumps all else…
