12-Year-Old Cyclist Hit by a Car and Injured

CROWN HEIGHTS [CHI] — A 12-year-old boy on a bike was injured after he was struck by a car on Empire Boulevard.

According to the cyclist he was riding in the bike lane on Empire near Albany Avenue when he came upon a double parked car which was blocking the bike lane, and attempted to go around it, driving straight into a passing car.

The boy was riding the bike without a helmet and suffered a minor head injury, which would have been avoided had he been wearing a protective helmet.

Hatzalah, Shomrim and police responded to the scene, and the boy was transported to a local hospital for additional checkups and observation. The officers which responded to the accident acted professionally and were extremely courteous.

not only did the boy lack a helmut, but lights on the bike so people can see you. also you never know what kind of driver is behind the wheel, could be on med, drugs, drinking,no kidding, you wait for the car to go first,so who cares who’s right, as long as you are safe. when my children were younger,l said you wait for the car to stop, not the light, you have to be safe, not right. and another thing,it’s vital for everyone who’s riding a bike, you must know the bikes rules in the street, and yes you must singal just like a car needs to“““““““““

  • safety first

I don’t ride a bike, but even I know that a) you ALWAYS wear a helmet & b), make sure your bike has lights that work & you wear reflective clothing/strips.

    Hope the boy is OK.

THERE HAVE BEEN MORE ACCIDENTS SINCE THEY PUT IN THE BIKE LANES THEN BEFORE! MARTY IS RIGHT MAKE IT BACK TO 2 LANES

  • JEW

Of course your gonna have accidents when you force kids to ride their bikes on the road alongside motor vehicles. Don’t kick them off the sidewalk in the first place.

Then you have the issue of minors. kids are entitled to ride their bikes outside their homes without getting fines

Thanks to NYPD, Hatzolah and Shomrim.
We have to keep in mind that *good-doers* try their best to do good.

  • Never ride a bike without a helmet!!

The boy is being held overnight in ICU for observation due to a concussion. His name is Tzvi ben Tzipporah

the age for riding in the street should be raised to at least 15. You can not expect or allow a twelve year old to drive in the street. But we live in NY, so twelve year olds will get summons if they are on the sidewalk.

no 6 and 14, you’ve noticed that last line

CHI we can all learn from you.

You set a fine example of what it means to respect the request of our Rabbonim.

    Thank you.

  • Dangerous

That’s one of the big problems with the bike lanes – they are in a location where cars are constantly blocking them -which creates a very dangerous situation.

  • what!?

the boy could have been killed and all u care about is wat he COULD have done how about saying tehillim for him instead?

    1) ALWAYS wear a helmet when you ride a bike. NO EXCEPTIONS.

    2) ALWAYS use front and rear flashing lights. NO EXCEPTIONS.

    3) We need a psak halacha saying this because people don’t do the smart thing.

  • LESSON from this

From now on I’m telling my bike-riding family members that, if there’s a car blocking the bike lane:

Get down off the bike and WALK the bike past the offending blocking car, VIA THE SIDEWALK.

R”L that the young boy should be hurt, for the rest of us to be taught a lesson.

    Refuah sheleimah!

  • A cyclist

Before anyone jumps on me, I don’t live in NY.
I’ve been bicycling for years and I have been in numerous near accidents where car drivers didn’t take into account that a bike travels faster then a person walking and tried to “pull into a driveway before I got there,” etc. From reading the various articles that have been posted about the bike lanes in NY, I get it, it’s cutting into badly needed car lanes, and not all cyclists are particularly careful. But at the same time there’s a responsibility that lies with the driver! You need to be aware at all times of pedestrians or cyclists that can walk/ride out in front of you. Don’t take risks like trying to beat a cyclist to an intersection- Unlike cars, most people don’t take their bicycle into the shop to have their brakes checked! Braking in a car is much more reliable then braking on a bicycle- and your car is much better equipped to make a risky maneuver then a bike. If you’re trying to cut in front of the bike and you misjudge- chances are the cyclist will NOT be able to stop in time.

And just a reminder- please look before you turn a street corner! Last year I was hit by a SUV making a right turn without looking. I don’t live in NY and so was riding on the sidewalk and properly crossing the street in the cross walk. I wasn’t able to prove that the driver was on his cell phone, but it took him almost a block to break after he had hit me so hard I went flying into the air and slammed into the ground. Yes there are laws against talking on your phone while driving- but please, it’s not only about the ticket!
