8:00pm: Overspending, Inheritance, Euthanasia, Children Hurt by the System, Peer Pressure

This week’s edition of MyLife: Chassidus Applied with Rabbi Simon Jacobson, Episode 42, will air tonight, Sunday, here on CrownHeights.info beginning at 8:00pm. This week Rabbi Jacobson will address the following topics: Overspending, Inheritance, Euthanasia, Children Hurt by the System, Peer Pressure and a follow-up on the Ohel and Igros.

Stinginess may be an issue for some, but what about the other side of the coin: overspending or living beyond one’s means?  Feeding into the consumer-driven society and feeling pressured to keep up with the neighbors can be destructive, creating Shalom bayis conflicts and placing families at financial risk. What is the correct balance between stinginess and prudence?

What is the significance and how does one practically implement the Rebbeim’s advice to discuss our children’s chinuch (education) thirty minutes each day? How can we rebuild our children after a crushing experience, especially when the perpetrator is a mosad or authority? Is there any advice for dealing with peer pressure and preserving our children’s innocence in the face of friends without boundaries and with different levels of observance? Should the laws outlined in the Torah about inheritance still be considered today? Or do we abide by the country we live in where both boys and girls inherit equally? What other considerations should be made?

A 29 year old woman suffering from tremendous pain due to terminal brain cancer legally ended her life last week, under the Death with Dignity Act in Oregon. This woman’s choice received a lot of attention and support online, on social media and in the news. What is the Torah’s view on “dignified death,” taking one’s life to alleviate pain and suffering? What can be said or done in the face of growing support for this?

Rabbi Jacobson will also revisit some topics from the previous week due to the tremendous amount of feedback that came in.

This hour-long dose of insight is meant to inform, inspire and empower us by applying the teachings of Chassidus to help us face practical and emotional challenges and difficulties in our personal lives and relationships. MyLife: Chassidus Applied addresses questions that many people are afraid to ask and others are afraid to answer. When asked about the sensitive topics he has been addressing, Rabbi Simon Jacobson commented, “I understand that the stakes are high, but the silence and lack of clarity on matters plaguing the community can no longer go unaddressed. The stakes of not providing answers are even higher.”

The on-going series has provoked a significant reaction from the community, with thousands of people viewing each live broadcast and hundreds of questions pouring in. At the root of every question and personal challenge tackled by the series is the overarching question: Does Judaism have the answers to my personal dilemmas?

In inimitable “Jacobson-fashion”, the broadcast answers people’s questions in simple, clear language while being heavily sourced. Each episode is jam-packed with eye-opening advice from the Rebbeim, gleaned from uncovering surprising gems in their letters, sichos and maamorim that address our personal issues with disarming relevance. Simultaneously, Rabbi Jacobson is able to crystallize a concept quickly, succinctly, and poignantly for any level of listener.
