Purim Around the World: Chernigov, Ukraine

This Purim, the Jewish community of Chernigov almost did not have the chance to celebrate Purim. Due to the security threats in Ukraine, the planned Purim celebration had to be canceled, and celebrations were far from anyone’s mind.

But in true Chabad spirit, Rabbi Yisroel and Aliza Silberstein managed to bring the energy of Purim to Chernigov’s Jews.

With the hours counting down, they located a secure location, hired the best entertainment, and catered a most delicious Purim feast. Brunoy bochurim Moshe Cohen and Naftali Reinetz read the megillah many times over and infused the event with true Purim spirit. The laughter and fun was therapeutic as it erased the stresses of the past weeks.

This year, the Jews of Chernigov were able to celebrate not only Purim, but also their own miracle of survival of the Jewish spirit against the odds.

From the smiles on the faces, it was a clear victory.
