Chabad of Oakland Finds Lakeside Location
After a somewhat nomadic existence over the past four years, Chabad of Oakland and Piedmont has settled into a new — and perhaps permanent — location near Lake Merritt.
“It’s a great location, right on the lake, and the views are very nice,” Rabbi Dovid Labkowski said of the spot at 3008 Lakeshore Ave. in Oakland. “It very central, and I really like the space.”
Chabad is leasing approximately 1,000 square feet in a commercial property that has a kitchen, office and multipurpose room that can comfortably seat 40 for a Shabbat service, Labkowski said.
Although Chabad has been in the space for about two months and has held a Passover seder and other programs, there are still renovations that haven’t been completed.
For that reason, no official grand opening has been planned yet, although Labkowski said it could occur soon. Check http://www.jewishoakland.org for updates.
Chabad of Oakland and Piedmont launched in 2006 in a residential location on Sunnyhills Road in Oakland’s Trestle Glen neighborhood. Since 2009, it has moved to two other locations, on Grand Avenue for two years and a temporary spot on Park Boulevard.
