NYPD Issues Safety Guidelines for Tishrei Visitors

As multitudes of guests from around the world flock to Crown Heights for the High Holidays, the police officers at the 71st Precinct’s Community Affairs Division have requested that we inform the visitors of the following basic safety tips to adhere to during their stay:

    1. Do not walk on the street with an expensive cell phone, jewelry or any other valuables in full view – they may be found too enticing by a would-be-criminal to ignore.
    2. Avoid walking alone on an empty street, especially at night, and if you do – beware of your surroundings at all times.
    3. Only cross the street at the designated cross-walks, and only when the traffic signal indicates that it is safe to do so. This is especially important on Eastern Parkway between Kingston and Brooklyn Aves., where numerous motorists call in to complain of bochurim dodging high-speed traffic to cross in middle of the roadway.
    4. Do not leave luggage or any other personal belongings on the street or in the vicinity of 770. Suspicious looking items may be subject to disposal by the NYPD bomb squad.
    5. Keep emergency numbers handy at all times. For police, firefighters or EMT, dial 911. For Hatzalah, dial 718-387-1750. For Shomrim, dial 718-774-3333.

With blessings for a happy, healthy, safe and sweet new year!

    another thing
if you do not have per arranged accommodation do not come.
Most importantly if you are an Israel or French parent don’t send your unmarried girls without knowing their hosts personally. They can easily get into trouble or even worse, as has happened in the past.
Crown Heights is very hefker over Tishrei.
    Be responsible parents.
I am happy to write this on the hebrew sites if it will help

    • boys & couples too

Beis Moshiach, stop calling me. I WILL NOT HOST ANYONE. Not for meals, not to sleep, nothing. It’s bad enough I watched a group of boys spitting in the street, throwing soda cans around & smoking (I think one was smoking a joint!!) by the dreidel @ the JCM today. Animals. Why would I take them into my home?

    • Ezra

I see, #2. And you know for a fact that the ones they’ll ask you to put up are the very same ones you saw? Or are you simply generalizing and stereotyping? Why, with that kind of ahavas Yisroel – calling your fellow Jews “animals” – Moshiach must surely be around the corner… maybe you won’t invite him in either?

  • declasse' intelelctual

The notice missed one important point: have your Smith and Wesson or Ruger ready for usage if necessary. Because Crown heights is one of the most unsafest places and criminals have a free reign. If you are3 looking for police–they are on mandatory ticket writing patrol.

  • Please explain clearly!

“They can easily get into trouble or even worse, as has happened in the past.”

Please provide specific DETAILS!! (a la “rochel bitcha haktana”).

  • Preaching to the choir

Unless this is printed in Hebrew and French am handed out to our guests, this post is a waste if space. We all know these suggestions. The point is that it is for our “guests”

If you have only attacks on what ever we try to help ,
better keep them to your self ,

the police knows where most problems happen ,

are they wrong by crossing the street on Eastern
Parkway , ???? how many were injured ,

are they wrong by walking your self @ $4 am ,
this happens in all neiberhoods ,

they have stolen many smart phones in the past , this happens every where , and on subways , ona dayly bases ,

how meny unsupevised loggee wass stolen in the past ???

what’s wrong with keeping a emergency telephon number ,

if you dont like to invite guests for Tishrei , please let others do it ,

  • HUH, are you serious?

    To #6:

I am not #1. But, here are some DETAILS. The host might be not normal, and subject the poor, innocent souls to some of the following:

    1. Getting sneezed and/or coughed on –
    wonder why they get sick?

    2. Gain their confidence so they divulge personal information – later on they are victims of identity theft and wonder why.

    3. Things missing from the house – so they get the blame.

    4. Let’s see, uh, yeh – late night farbrengen – so they can’t sleep, or decide to see what it’s like to get drunk themselves, possibly after being prodded by the host.

    etc., etc., etc..

  • Meir Abehsera

To those of you who, in the old days, who remember Meir Abehsera (descendant of the famous Sephardic Tzadik,”Abuchatzera.”) he was truly a very special person. Someone needed a place to stay, never a problem by him.

So, one day, he gets a call from someone asking to put up a guest.”Sure, send her over.” Then, he let the caller have it,”Why is it that you don’t want to take her in?” So, he kind of beat around the bush and gave Meir an evasive answer, which he did not accept.. Finally, he told Meir the truth: “I’m afraid she may be unstable, so I don’t want to put my kids at risk.” Meir said,”So I should be the pushover and put my kids at risk?!”
